I switched to a 9” extreme air cleaner with a flat base and 2.25 high filter. Top of the air cleaner hits the engine hood and my choices are to get a 2” filter or change the 1” carb spacer to a1/2” spacer. Current spacer is open and I do have a 1/2” 4 hole spacer...

What engine is it?
I think you should use all of your available height, for sure. It doesn't like you have a very big filter so I wouldn't want to exchange much of that height for spacer height.
Why not a drop base filter?

If you have a single Holley and don't mind using a "GM design", an L88 baseplate works wonders. It is what I use. I have a 1" spacer and a 14x3.5" filter on the 428 in my '67 Cougar.

Is your air filter the one with an additional filter in the lid?

The car is a replica Cobra. The top of the extreme lid is touching the scoop. I thought I Need some space between the lid and the scoop.

I think you should have some space over the lid, especially if the extreme lid is the one with the filter in the top. I personally don't think those are the best filter types. I'll let the cobra guys take over now. Brent would know.

Thanks but 9” is the max dia of the air cleaner...it sits up un the scoop of the hood. I was trying to find out if I would be better off getting a shorter spacer or a shorter air filter

Put the 1/2 inch spacer on it.
I have run those x-stream lids and they did better than the internet said they would....

Barry,
Thnx

Will it make a difference if it is a open or 4 hole spacer? Also, will the carb need to be rejected?
-
I doubt it will require a rejet.
If you are happy with what you have now, I would run the same style spacer but 1/2 inch. Hard to tell without testing.
