I thought a Drag-Pack car always had an oil cooler. Today, I helped a friend set up at an indoor car show. Met an old-timer with a 1969 Mustang GT Cobra-Jet Drag-Pack car. He said his Marti report said it was 1 of 1. 4.30 gear but no oil cooler. Was I wrong to think the cooler was mandatory? Educate me please.

It must be an early car. The 3.91 and 4.30 gears started with the 68 1/2 CJ cars. But the oil coolers where added later on in the Sept/Oct 68 timeframe to alleviate issues the lower gear ratios were causing. Ford did not officially start calling the Drag Pack option out and charging for it until the Feb 69 timeframe.

I can't answer your question, but that's an awesome car. I had one that I sold to a friend a few years back. He's nearly done with the restoration, as close to "correct" as he can get it. Really rare cars indeed!
If I remember correctly, it's a March/April '69 car, and it has the oil cooler.

I am a regular on the Cobra Jet Registry forum and as near as we can tell, there were a few 3.91 and 4.30 cars built very early in the '69 model year. They didn't have the oil cooler. Ford stopped accepting orders for these gear ratios for a few months until they had the cooler worked out and available. When production of the SCJ cars started again, possibly late Nov. '68 and definitely Dec. '68, the coolers were fitted and all should have the cooler thereafter.
