Is there any reason to not run a wix 51773 filter insted of a 51515 ??? It looks to just add a quart or oil to the system. I would think this could only be a good thing. I seem to have plenty of room for it ...
I have a canton 7qt oil pan .. In my thinking the stock dip stick should still be right , right ? it should hold 2 gallons with a oil change and stock filter and 9qt with the longer filter ?
I would like to run rotella 15/40 ... any reason not to ?

No problem with doing so. The crankcase fill should be increased by the near 1 quart greater oil filter size. But, with a 7 quart pan (Canton) already in use, the bigger filter is a tad of overkill IMHO. Still, a bigger filter and 1 more qt. of oil is pretty cheap compared to what can happen in hard cornering!

I think the Wix 51515/NAPA is a low po cheap filter.

I highly dought my little motor will ever POP a wix filter. There tested to 400psi and then its the gasket that blows out. who knows if His filter was put on to lite,the gasket was crooked, ect ect... shit happens. doesn't seem to be common .
My thoughts on the longer 2qt filter are that the most common thing is a filter kicking into bypass,with a bigger filter you get more area of filtering and more chance of the filter being able to handle the volume of oil needed to filter and not kicking into bypass. The more oil in the system the cooler the oil temps should stay and I should not have any chance of sucking the pan dry.

The dipstick should read correctly with your Canton pan.
If the bigger filter fits and doesn't hand down too much, I say why not? I'd fill it to 8, fire it up, let it drain down and then add to full line. It might be another quart, but it may not, but then you'll know

Ran them before with no problems. At EMC they mandate a minimum of five qts. Back when we also needed to run a catalog oil pan I used to run the deep filter to "park" a quart. I'd then make pulls and add just enough to stay away from a pressure drop at high RPM. Nothing like looking at oil pressure that starts at 50 & drops into the 30s at 6500....

Easy to believe using a larger capacity filter adds protection when connering or accelerating when the oil pickup may get uncovered. Unfortunately that extra capacity is as Barry says "parked" and does nothing to assure oil is available to get picked up by the pick-up. The amount of oil held in the filter is fixed and it will not spare a drop.

with the wix 51515 filter my oil level is right on the money with 2 gallons of oil /8qts .... I think thats plenty good for a street engine. I'll keep it like that. easy to remember. ;D

I use the Wix 51773. I run 8 quarts total using a 7 quart Mildon pan. Works great. Rotella 15W40 should be fine, too.
