Title: Anybody put a E$od in a 63?
Post by: gregaba on February 12, 2019, 11:37:41 AM
Ok
Looking for options and wanted to know if anyone has installed a E4OD in a 63.
I don't mind buying an adapter and controller but don't want to cut my tunnel to much.

Never installed one in a 63 but overhauled a bunch of E4OD over the years and it sure is big , if you don't have mega power a AOD style 4R70 and 75 are pretty stout and much smaller than E4OD , you would still have the adapter and controller to deal with

I should be putting out about 450 HP and I wasn't sure if a aod or a 4r70 would hold up.

I gave up on the idea when I put the E4OD next to the C6. Definitely need transmission tunnel work.

I wasn't sure how much bigger the E4OD was compared to the C6. That is why I was asking.
I really don't want to modify my tunnel. One of the reason I bought this car was because it needed no body work.
My Ranchero ruined me for doing rust repair and bodywork.

Same for me. This here Galaxie is from AZ originally, beautiful floor pan. I can't bring myself to cut it.

Yes I agree.
So a new question, Has anybody has success with a 4r70 handling Horsepower.
How reliable are they on the street with 10 or 12 trips to the strip every year?

4R70/75 should be fine … AOD would need a real good build , 4R70 you could throw in there

Good to know.
A friend of mine has a salvage yard and the tranny is free. So I will just have to shell out $750.00 for the adapter and 500.00 for the controller and the rebuild kit.
Sounds like the way to go.

You're in GearVendor cost range; another possible option...

I looked at the gear venders but they were in the $3000.00 plus price range.
I searched on the net and the cheapest used one I found was 2600.00.
I can buy the adapter for $750, the controller for $500.00 and the master street-strip kit for 350.00.
I can rebuild the tranny myself so nothing in it but my time.
So I am looking at about $1900.00 plus any incidentals.
Will have to buy a driveshaft anyway as my car came without one. The original owner must not have checked the option list when he bought it.

I put a E40D wide-ratio gear kit in a C6 in my '62 before going to a manual.  I still had to cut up the cross member to clear the pan on the C6, but it did fit the tunnel a-ok.  The wide ratio kit was nice, got up and moving in a hurry.  If you're not hell-bent on that O.D. gear, a kit in a C6 could work for you.

Upfront, I know little about transmissions, so don't know if the below are complete/usable...

I all ready have the wide ratio conversion in my C6. When I rebuilt it 2 years ago That is one of the things we upgraded. Just not sure if it will do what I want.
Dumpling
Thanks for the link. I checked it out and I would need a Doug Nash overdrive unit for it.
Would love to have a DN but don't know if I can find a unit to fit a C6 and how hard it would be to get replacement parts now.
The 2 I had in the 70's were great and never gave me any problems.

Is there an E4OD converter that works with 1.849 pilot?

Is there an E4OD converter that works with 1.849 pilot?

On the E4OD/4R100 I've installed on FE's, I just matched the crank spacer to whatever pilot I needed.

Hi
I found a Doug Nash OD unit another member has that he disassembled. I didn't see anything that worry's me in the pictures.
It has been awhile since I have run one and for the life of me I can't remember what lube it uses.
Does anybody know what lube it takes?
I have the manual for rebuilding it and know where to get the switch and motor about the only thing that goes wrong with these units.
All though its not a automatic OD it will take me back to my 55 Mercury with a 3 speed and overdrive.
This unit will do what I want which is to have a lower ratio rear for the strip and the ability to have overdrive when I am on the highway.
It is so far to any where here that this would serve me well.
If the price is right and the shipping doesn't put me back in the poor house I think I will go this way.

The thing about a bolt on OD like Gear Vendors or Doug Nash is good as long as you don't have too much convertor stall. Otherwise the benefit of an OD ratio gets absorbed in the stall.  OD is good when you have a direct shaft like an AOD or a Torque convertor clutch like a 4R70 or E4OD.

I am the first to admit that I don't know much about auto tranny's. I have all ways ran standard tranny's.
I have back problems and have trouble in traffic with pushing the clutch in and out now.
When I rebuiltd my C6 I ordered a TCI sizzler torque with just about 400 or 500 stall over stock.
I don't mind running a stock converter if that would be better for what I am using the car for.
I have a friend with a 5000 stall in his 66 Mustang and when it kicks in it tears my back up so I didn't want to go with a high stall.
This is basically a street car so I didn't want to go crazy with it.
Any advice is welcome because the car is still apart and I can change things around with my build.

Converter has to work with the chosen Camshaft . After that it totally depends on how the Converter is made , for example if you rode in my Fairlane with 5K stall you would never know it as it cruises fine 2350 RPM up hill grade no problems , it also applies  smooth and not like a on-off switch that hits hard though it's probably not the best converter for racing it does street drive nice for 5K stall unit that can power brake 4900 RPM (if you wanted )

The only reason I went with a higher the stock stall was Comp Cams says it needed a higher stall to work with the 280H I ordered.
I only hit the strip 10 or 12 times a year and wanted to keep my drive ability.
I really want to have my cake and eat it to. I would like to be able to launch at 4500 but still want street manner's.
Never been able to do this with an auto before.
Would like someone to invent a clutch less tranny that would still shift easy on the street.Something that didn't take gorilla legs to operate and would hold as much power as you could put in it.
He would be a millionaire real fast.
Your system sounds interesting. The people I called when looking for my converter all said that it would slip in the lower RPM ranges in daily driving and hit somewhat hard when it locked up.
