Title: 67 Mustang Fastback build
Post by: 67 Fastback on August 29, 2012, 07:37:58 AM
My mustang build consists of a Silver 390 fe 4 speed car that has been resurected so to speak. The car was in a poor state when i purchased it  from many years of neglect and abuse , it has had many  different colours some accident damage and died from 3  45 calliber bullet holes to the body where and when i dont no . It has had a complete makeover with new panels where required and many hours of body work to bring it back to life ,many thanks to my sons and good friends .I have just finished fitting a G-bar 4 link rear suspension and my own front coil over front end . Disc brakes all round with 330 mm discs up front with 4 spot calipers .It has a 31 spline 3.25 rear end with a TKO 600 transmission . The engine build has just started with a 390 FE 40 thou over with a Scat 4.125 assembly and custom grind  Comp hydraulic roller cam ,T&D roller rocker assembly all from Barry R and with Edelbrock heads . It will be running a FAST XFI fuel injection on a Dove Tri Power Tunnel wedge manifold . F&B throttle bodies are building the Tri Power fuel system for the manifold with billet throttle bodies .Bruce Bridges has done a system for a Small Block Ford ,and many systems for Big block Chrylser . Check his site  out he does some great work . Should look great with a Oval air cleaner on top . I am hoping this will all match in to bring some life back into a great old car .I hope to post some photos as the build comes together .

Regards Mark

Mark

Looks like a nice build.  Where are you located? I hope to see some more updates on your motor build.

You should post a build thread over on LatG.

http://www.lateral-g.net/forums/

As info they'd be stoked on your chassis and brake work and no nothing about the motor.

Are you planning on taking it to any Goodguys or other autocross or road events?  If so maybe I'll see you there with my Torino.

Rob

Yes it certainly is something different for a FE .From all accounts the systems they have fitted to  Mopars work quite well and with most driving situations running on the centre throttle body there will a smooth transition to  WOT . Hopefully all will work well once we get the tune set up with the Fast XFI .I have had some previous expierence setting up a Wolf 3D fuel injection system on a Twin charged 1.8 litre so it was quite complexed setting up the fuel and ignition maps, hopefully this will be more straight foward.

As far as the rest of the build is going good progress is being made with the Fuel injection , injector bungs are welded in ,waiting on fuel rails from the anodisers . The XFI has arrived at F&B as well as MSD 6AL and coil . Could not ask for better service Bruce is great .Short block is coming along i am waiting on Camshaft , rocker gear and other parts to arrive from Barry R so the engine can be assembled . Edelbrock heads are being stripped for a cleanup and for valve springs to suit cam .Sorry about the double up on photos .Have a good day .

Just some updates on progress intake is close to shipping a few issues with clearance with the height of the distributor as the throttle bodies sit lower than the holleys . have been  fitting out interior with new headliner ,dynamat to floors front and rear glass .Block was cleaned in a molasses dip to remove scale and has been half filled with grout .And has  been bored to suit 40 thou over pistons and assembly has started .With the camshaft and rocker gear arriving as well as the tripower setup things are looking up.

We shipped Marks system out after getting an Accel Dual sync distributor modified and harnessed to work with the FAST XFI system.  Getting everything together for a turnkey conversion kit proved to be challenging  :o(the distibutor has the  HEI style cap, neccesitating new spark plug wires, etc. etc.) Now IM thinking of doing an FE for my Wifes 68 Cougar instead of the stroked SBF.  Thanks Mark!  Too many choices!

Once again i must say a great thankyou to Bruce for his effort in this build ,it is great when you find someone so passionate with what he does and his business ethics are up there with the best .Especially when we are so far apart and rely on phone conversations and emails .The engine build continues just waiting on the final pieces for it all to come together .Manifold and heads can now be port matched .Once the roller rockers and lifters arrive the engine will be complete .It will be interesting to see what the final result will bring in terms of HP ,torque and the how the car performs . And i can't leave out having a build that is my own . I appreciate that this forum and group of people are so willing to share their knowledge and passion for these old cars and engines .

Well Santa arrived with the Roller rockers via the Nth Pole  ,the engine build is complete ,i hope to pick it up this saturday. Will post some photos as soon as i can .We are having some extreme temperatures here is Australia so hopefully it might cool down before i start fitting it all in .What are your thoughts on fitting engine and tko 600 as one assembly ? The extractors are all single pipes so they should be ok to fit .Once assembled will send car to have remaining exhaust built ,do you guys have  a preference for mufflers it will be a twin 3 inch system .  Once i get back home from exhaust shop the rest of the build can then proceed .

Jack the back of the car up a couple feet the motor and trans will slip right in as one unit.

6 months ago, I had a new exhaust fitted to my Galaxie. I know the guy who did the job, he does a lot of performance car work over here. I asked him about Magnaflow or Dynomax muffler, but he recommended Lukey S/S mufflers. They are a straight through design, so minimal flow restriction, sound mellow under normal driving, but have a real nice bark when the foot goes down.

I am going with the Cobra Svt brakes F&R that gives me 13" front and 11" rear with vented brakes all around. The best thing is after market parts are plentiful and readily available.

Thanks guys was just a bit concerned with the new paint job ,from Jay's photo looks good as the auto with odrive is a lot longer assembley then the TKO.I want to keep exhaust at a reasonable level as the law over here are coming down hard on any modified cars ,i have been advised to run mufflers as well as rear resonators as not to draw to much attention .The younger drift scene over here have drawn a lot of attention to the hotrod and modified car scene .Bi modal mufflers are popular being fitted by FORD to the Falcon GT which has a factory fitted supercharged 5 litre  Coyote .A very quick car a six speed auto on street tyres will run 12.8 quarter mile times .

Hi Mark. Looks like a great project. I always like to bolt motor to trans and put in together, headers and all, like Jays pic. Sooo much easier. I notice its still left hook so you can't be in SA! Keep the pics coming.

Never had an FE in a mustang before. How do you guys deal with headers vs shock towers? Looks a bit tight.
Title: Re: 67 Mustang Fastback build
Post by: jayb on February 05, 2013, 03:42:41 PM
"Tight" is an understatement, but it can be done.  Lots easier to install the headers while the engine is going into the car than to try to get them on with the engine bolted in place.  Ground clearance is another issue.  I'd go with FPA tri-Y headers for ground clearance reasons.  Test fit them with the engine and trans hooked together in case you need to grind anything (a block boss, transmission case, etc.) to make them fit, and then install them with the engine/trans.  Usually I can get those installed with the driver's side header bolted on from the start, and then after the engine and trans are in position but still up off the mounts by 6" or so, bolt the passenger side on, then drop the engine down onto its final position.

Jay the biggest issue i had was clearance around the power steering box i have fitted in the car .Lucky i have small hands and time .The right side looks ok so should'nt be a problem .

Yes, seems like there is always some issue that you have to work through with header installs...

The headers I am proposing to use ( Doug's 627 ) come with a list of mods like tower, steering and possibly others.

What jay said x2. Out of necessity, lack of equipment, a small driveway and my inexperience it took probably 30+ hours to get FPA's installed correctly in my Fairlane. It's tight. I could not even get mine in with just the short block installed. Definitely mock the long block up attached to the trans and with the headers installed to check for interference if at all possible. I had to grind part of the block boss and bell housing on the drivers side from under the car with a Dremel as it's the only tool that would fit in there. 2 words.. "not fun". I cannot see what PS setup you have in there but watch for hose and cylinder clearance if it's similar to the stock setup. Good luck!

Yeah, that shouldn't draw ANY attention from the police....lmao 8)

Glad this thread came back to the top. Hadn't seen it before.
I had no idea that Dove even made a tri-power tunnel wedge. Seems like a goofy thing to make UNTIL you added fuel injection to it. That's a very cool set-up.

Looks like an awesome car, and sounds really good. If I were you, I would find where the local police hang out and make friends....maybe buy them some coffee and doughnuts. ;)

Car is now up and running it has gone through all the engineering certificates and road worthy certificates that are required over here to register a modified vehicle  . I am very pleased with the end result I don't have to tell you guys but this thing  sounds wicked and performance is quite scary ,once the outer throttle bodies open all hell breaks loose .
