Title: Poon Tang
Post by: FElony on May 30, 2018, 01:17:03 PM
http://www.iagclassics.com/carpages/1969-Shelby-GT500-King-Cobra-For-Sale.html

Read the article. The second owner, Stan Sherman, lived in Canoga Park as did I at the time, but as I recall his shop was in Reseda. I don't remember how/why I wound up at there. I knew another shop owner in the area who may have pointed me. I have a NOSITB D-Locker that may have come from Stan.

Anyway, it was mighty neat car. When I was there it had already been re-lettered from King Cobra to PoonTang. We know poon is a nickname for a girl's cootchie. That kinda fit Stan's "rough around the edges", but congenial, persona. Now, related to that somewhat, is an item that is not evident in the pictures in this article. See that, across the trunk lid when in King Cobra livery, it says "He who snoozes loses". I distinctly remember that Stan had replaced that, in much smaller script, with "Better stick your foot in it, 'cuz second place ain't shit". It was something that stuck in my mind. Gee.

I recall returning there with my Kodak Instamatic to snap that trunk and the rest of the car. I haven't seen those pics in years, but I might know where they are buried in all my crap. Stan was kind enough to fire up the beast uncorked for me. It sound great, of course, because a Jet is a Jet.

Wasn't it in a magazine as Poon Tang 1? I know I've seen a car that name in a late 70's or early 80's article.

" Other options ordered on this car, according to its Deluxe Marti Report, are Sport Deck rear seat, Visibility Group, AM radio, Deluxe Belts, Tachometer, power steering and power brakes with front discs."

??? Isn't all that standard on a Shelby? If they ordered it for racing they'd have got manual steering and drums if they could.

You are assuming that Mattingly ordered it. I think that was specced out by the dealer and Mattingly bought it off the floor. The beginning of the article mentions that he drove it on the street for a while first. Perhaps not real sure if he wanted to hack it into a racer? That sound plausible? I know I'd think twice about it. I think if he was looking for a racer, he would have purchased a lighter, cheaper, Mustang. The Shelby was maybe an emotional buy, sittin' there all pretty in the showroom.

As for a magazine feature, I don't recall. Lots of cars in that area and time were in print. Maybe in Super Ford?

I've seen it here in the So Cal area for years. Car shows , car auctions , etc. IMHO  it would do better if it were restored back to a stock 69 GT500 condition. The market for ex '69 drag cars is not as strong as it is for original cars unfortunately.

In general, I would agree. I think cars that were "National Record Holders" or similar would out-value a stocker. This car seems to have been a one-track pony (see what I did there) that had no country-wide notoriety. One would think, however, if there was a large gap in value between stock and modified, that somebody would have snatched this car up and reverted it back to showroom.

I'd love to know if it's currently for sale. If I had it, it would go back to POONTANG!!. 'Cuz that's how I roll!

Been trying to find info on another SFValley Mustang from then called Fantasia. Was a showcase from a custom painter. I seem to remember color graphics shot onto a white car. Anyone?

I remember the Fantasia van from the blvd but the mustang is hazy. You know who might know is Brad the owner of QMP engines. He’s prolly a bit young but he’s good with that stuff.

Ah hell yes good job! Great link, too bad I didn't find myself on that page. AFAIK, I had the only "hopped-up" GT/CS cruising VNB. The Good Old Days. [sniff].  :'(  My car had the same hood scoop as Fantasia. Will put one back on. Still have GT/CS.

Aha. I was in the private sector in the west end of C. Park, and we had ceremonies for Kindergarten, 8th and 12th grades. My home "track" was Fallbrook Ave (which we called Fallbrook International Raceway). My test track was Woodlake Ave between Victory and Vanowen, which the city so graciously repaved when I was 17 so I could get better traction. I lived one block west of there.

I was going to direct you to the 1979 movie "Van Nuys Blvd" which used to be on YouTube in its entirety. It was filmed on location and is so dead-on it makes me cry. However, it seems that the YT a-holes have removed it, as with so many others, so we can have the privilege of paying. I may have saved it a few years ago. Not sure.

What happened, Heo, is we became dinosaurs. According to the Net, there is again cruising on VNB, one Wednesday night a month. I can only imagine what it looks like now. Yecch. An infamous author wrote a story about a night there back then, hoisted onto the Net a few years ago. I cannot find that anymore, either. Probably on my other hard drive.

Edit: Tribute video:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ehbWQBXuAOs  Hey look, it's a Victory Blvd sign at the end! The Wild Cherry van was recently found abandoned in the desert and is undergoing restoration.

Yes i saw that movie when it came out in Sweden 8)
Imagine seeing thath movie living here where you could
have to tow the car beacuse of to narrow mudflaps.
Or more than 15 mm over stock trackwidth.  and take it
to tec inspection to be able to drive it....
The VNB seemed like heaven on earth
The result of that was to have the widest tires and rims you could find
you got towed any way so why not do it properly :D
Kelly ,Torquetwister and Formula 1 Superstock N50/15 was popular 8)

I read some cool stories about VNB on Hamb a few years ago by a guy
called Groucho
I saw somewhere that wild cherry filmed on a trailer on its way to a
new home

We liked Mason and Winnetka as they were closed off by the railroad. Winnetka had a nice little curve in the shut down area that the fast cars had to worry about. :o
Remember north VNB up in Arleta after Wed cruise? Everyone that chose off during the cruise would meet there to settle.

That Nadine, what a teenage queen
She lookin' so clean, especi'lly down in between
What I like
She come to town, she be foolin' around
A-puttin' me down as a rock-and-roll clown
It's all right

(Wang dang sweet poontang)
(Wang dang sweet poontang)

Wang dang, what a sweet poontang
A-shakin' my thang as a rang-a-dang-dang in the bell
Ooh, baby
She's so sweet when she yanks on my meat
Down on the street you know she can't be beat
What the hell

(Wang dang sweet poontang)
(Wang dang sweet poontang)

All right, baby
You see what I got here in my hands
I got it right in my hands
Just for you, baby
I think I'm gonna yank on it one time
Look out!

Wang dang, what a sweet poontang
A-shakin' my thang as a rang-a-dang-dang in the bell

She's so sweet when she yanks on my meat
Down on the street you know she can't be beat

I raced Winnetka a lot. What were you running? Maybe we bumped heads there. I also ran at the VA hospital, Burbank Blvd in two spots, and at L.A. Valley College in Van Nuys after initial meetups behind the BofA on VNB. I also went over the western border to Thousand Oaks in the south and Simi Valley in the north. Ran on the 118 freeway while it was still under construction. But yeah under the bridge in San Fernando! Many others. This spanned my Mustang, Olds 442 (still have it), '67 Cyclone, CHP Polara, and whatever else. Big Willy and the Brotherhood would visit our turf occasionally, but I was not to be found down in their areas. No way.

I would have to consider myself and my cars to be second-tier at best. I was young and really didn't have money or space to get into things big time.

El Alacran was an on-the-spot effort to lend some mystique to an otherwise odious car rife with contagious thingies the government has yet to identify. Not quite as odious as Poon-flavored Tang, but hey to each his own.  ;)

You are a glutton for punishment! OK, I may have linked to this many years ago in the N54 forum, possibly. Anyway, the infamous author is just trying to convey a little of the mysticism of the VNB life to another person from another locale...

Ah, you would have hated it.

It's Friday afternoon and your buddy calls, needing a ride to check out a Chevy at a car lot on Sepulveda Blvd. You pick him up and head for the Union 76, where 100 octane leaded has just skyrocketed to 36 cents a gallon. On the way he remarks how every major intersection has tire stripes in all directions. He is anxious to add his own. At the lot the salesman leads us to a '67 Chevelle with no hood. A dual quad tunnel ram perches atop a solid-lifter 396. It has a 4-spd and 4.10's, and the test drive is hellacious. $1600 and, yes, they will finance with 100 down. You look around and realize that this lot is wall-to-wall muscle, as are the lots next door and across the street. Ain't no imports in this town, baby. Your friend blows off the gas guzzler Chevelle and settles on a Commando-powered '63 Belvedere with a built TorqueFlight and 4.56 Sure Grip. He drags out half the $1000 price and goes his own way as you head home. He is one of us now.

Yeah, you would have hated it.

It's Saturday afternoon and you look over your Mustang while you empty the sudsy bucket into the gutter. Boy, she's a beauty. Metallic blue, black hood with a 5" Sox and Martin scoop, L60's under flaired fenders, U.S. Indy mags, orange traction bars. Attitude in spades. An hour later your girlfriend slides inside. She is wearing a miniskirt with lace panties and a braless tube top. She smells like wild flowers, and you feel a familiar tingle in your jeans. Although you have bucket seats, she places herself on the pillow you have put between them, and tucks one foot on either side of the transmision hump. A quick hello kiss is followed by a longer, more serious one. She blushes and reaches for the AM radio. Hendrix does his best to battle your exhaust thunder, but he has no chance.

I know you would have hated it.

Saturday night and Van Nuys Boulevard is alive. Nowhere is there a bigger melting pot: lowriders, Harleys, nerdmobiles, surfers, racers. We make a couple passes. A lone Datsun 510 gets curious glances. Guys check out your chick; you check out theirs. Someone steps off the curb and snaps a pic of your Mustang. The slow pace is taking a toll on your radiator, and you head for the B of A.

Oh yes, the Bank of America on VNB. Ain't no low cars or two wheelers here. This is muscle central. 500 to 1000 of them, drifting into the huge parking lot out back, hidden from the hubbub of the main drag. Each hot shoe idles in, his high compression mill chopping its staccato song, and files his ride into an angled slot. Dimly lit, no radios playing, no tires screeching, no beer bottles breaking. Once in a while there is a fist fight, but boys will be boys. Flashlights inspect the other guys' engines. Some are caught in lies. Some aren't. Sleepers are parked next to straight axle cars. There is a Hillman panel with a Chrysler Hemi in back. Its owner looks sideways at the 6-71-blown 455 Cutlass. Hmmm.

Think you would have hated it?

Negotiations continue to fly about. You stash your girlfriend in the car as the police rumble through, looking for minors from their big block Mopar. They sit stonefaced as hundreds of eyes stare. A deal is struck after they leave, and the duelers lead a caravan of 40,000 cubic inches of Detroit's finest offspring into the night. The rest remain to polish their bench racing. Your girlfriend is talking to another girl who looks your way and smiles. A few yards away Bottle Bob explains the intricacies of a handicap start to a gullible newbie. It will soon be your turn to choose off and make a run.

This is how it always will be, you think. You breathe in the warm city air and listen to sirens in the distance. The magic is woven into your blood. There is nowhere else you'd rather be. Soon the rudeness of daybreak will make the metal roaches scurry for cover. You quickly whisk your girl away. There is still time for a "detour" on the way home. As you wrestle in the back seat, you wonder how long you will stay with her. There is so much ahead. But there will always be the races, won't there? You are a young man. You have no idea that writing about this night 24 years later will cause you to sob like that girl when you finally broke up with her. Yes, the best years of your life are long gone, and your soul with them.

I'm certain you would have hated it.

   Wouldn't you?

I had a little 65 fastback 289 mustang. Was the tan gold color (forget what it was called). It was the first engine I ever rebuilt. Did it on my dads garage floor. I kinda fibbed about the parts I needed to rebuild it. ;) It wasn’t fast even in for those days but it taught me a hell of a lot.
Had that car for quite a while.
This thread started a long bench race today with my buddy John Scheiss. He was a little after our time but Bottle Bob was still around. John told me the story about him trying to get a race with Bob. John had a stripped out and lightened VW bug that hauled ass. That damned thing had a lot of hp and ran low 13s. All the guys were hanging out at Ruebens on Reseda and Devonshire and John was bugging the shit out of Bob for a race. Finally Bob had had enough and took John around the back of the building to “talk”. He grabbed John by the throat and put him up against the building and said, “look pal, I know I can beat your ass but there’s no upside for me. If I win, big deal I beat a VW. If I happened to lose...........so don’t ask me again you little shit”

Still an extraordinary bit of prose.

With very few changes that story could have been written about a number of spots here in Detroit.
