Hi All,
I'm thinking of adding a PCV to a '63 427 with a 6V intake. I did some searching around and found good info but none of the photos in the posts were working. My current set up is one breather on the driver side valve cover and the vent on the rear of the intake that I assume the road tube would have attached to.
My questions are:
1) Should I install the PCV at the valve cover or the vent that stands up from the rear of the intake?
2) If I do vent from the valve cover do should I plug the vent on the rear of the intake?
3) I only have one vacuum port on the intake (at the rear). It is currently connected to the power brake booster. Can I tee this port and run both the PCV and brake booster from it?

The "typical" PCV screwed into the port at the back of the manifold and then ( via a rubber hose) went to the same location as the road draft tube using a plate with a hose nipple on it. There should be a "basket" under the plate that has mesh material in it as an oil separator.

Last time I did one, I went to Napa and looked through the PCV boxes, found one that was threaded, drilled and tapped a manifold blankoff plate to match. Same idea as the top link, but less money and more of my time.

How particular do I have to be about the PCV valve itself?

That one is just a lid, no pcv, no basket, etc. You more than likely have the basket already under your existing breather. I'd check and see if it's usable.
I used a cheapo pcv valve from summit. I restrict mine a good bit anyhow.

Yes. I have the basket and filter material in place. Do you know a source where I could get some new filter material? Or should I just degrease what I have?

You can buy it, i forget where.... but I'd just soak yours in some carb cleaner and see what falls out of it :P
As expensive as all these parts are, I'd be playing the "gee what can I keep" game.
If it was a new high dollar build maybe I'd look at it differently.

That's what I was thinking. The mesh is in fine shape, just a little gunked up.

I fought with a PCV system for a while and finally got it to quit sucking oil mist by using an expensive Wagner adjustable valve. Wish it would have occurred to me to just restrict the hose like Drew does.
Now I just run without a valve and don't miss it. My four corner breathers seem to stay fairly dry. Might clean them once a year.
I think it's just about as important to make sure the engine hits at least 180F on a regular basis to drive off moisture and other vapors.

Drew - how do you restrict the hose? Just use a smaller diameter?

Use a short piece of hard plastic or aluminum round stock. Drill say a .125 hole in the middle (experiment here) and stuff the piece up into the rubber hose.

Smaller hoses fit within the larger hose.
1/4 inch fits perfectly within 3/8 for example.... With weak intake vac at idle, a pcv doesn't really work as designed, it kinda flops around when it should be sealed. I just stuff things in the main hose until it works right..... kinda part of tuning.
I've heard some new cars don't even use a pcv, just a small restrictor. No expert on it all tho, just guessing my way to glory.

I have used a .060 restrictor in a few swoopy builds that did not want any oil mist underhood, but needed a breather. Seemed to work pretty well.

I use a 3/16 brake line union fits in hose snug. Really like the BT one in the picture.

I'd be playing the "gee what can I keep" game.
I may just use a piece of 1/2" hose to connect a PCV to the nipple already on the manifold plate to start off with. I'd like to buy the plate like you have but the guy hasn't gotten back to me if he would sell it separate from the basket. He sells the baskets separate so why not?
Did you tap yours to a pipe thread? I don't think I've ever tapped a something for pipe fitting.

If it's thick enough, go for it. Mine just uses a nipple to hose to pcv which is screwed into a 45 degree fitting and into the intake.

Thanks Alf. That is the setup I’m going to use if my prototype works ok. Instead of the brass T I’m going to use an Earl’s 3/8 to 1/4” Y splitter. Is there any type of restrictor in your setup?
