Title: Question on the FE Power CVR pump adapters...
Post by: cjshaker on April 23, 2018, 10:11:12 PM
I was researching what hose to use and found the Dayco 70782 on Amazon (Summit lists it as not being available till 5/9, Jegs doesn't list it at all) but have some concerns about the interference with the mechanical pump mount. I don't like the idea that it could rub a hole through it from street driving a thousand miles during Drag Week, so I looked at the AN fitting that CVR has and was considering going that route with a custom radiator using AN fittings. But I also have some concerns about the AN fitting size, which is -16. -16 only has a .875 inside hose diameter. I'm not sure, but I'd assume the fitting is a bit smaller than that. That leaves me concerned about coolant flow restriction on a high HP engine. If this were a strip only deal, I wouldn't be concerned, but it has to survive street miles also, and Drag Week can entail all sorts of traffic scenarios. I'm sticking with a mechanical pump (going to be trying the Clay Smith pump), so using Jays timing cover with the deleted pump option is not an option. I've considered that I could use some sort of protective wrap between the Dayco hose and fuel pump ear, if I go with the hose. That still is an open option that I'm considering if nothing else pans out.

So I have a couple questions: Has anyone found a good alternative to the Dayco hose, and if so, what is it? Would the -16 AN .875 hose size cause enough restriction in flow to not be able to cool a healthy engine? Any experience or suggestions with the adapters are welcome.

The pictures relating to the subject can be found here on the original thread of the pump adapters...

Doug,

Just installed Jay's adapters on the new Maverick motor....see pics. Very nice pieces but had the same concerns. The Dayco hose wouldn't work in my application....radiator spacing to the water pump different. I ended up using a 22" universal flex hose with 1 1/2" and 1 3/4" ends. The hose does rub against the fuel pump mounting ear but not too severe. I also thought about some ideas to fix this. First was weld a slight bend and extension to the screw in CVR hose fitting. This would require installing on the WP and clocking correctly before installing the WP. Second idea was to space out the WP from the block 1/4". This would mean adding spacers to the alternator and P/S brackets if used. The WP and Jay's adapters work so well for the alternator mounting especially if using a "low" mount. I have the Dayco hose that I couldn't use and you are welcome to it. I bought it from Rock Auto. Are you going to Beaver Springs?

Tony, I also thought about welding an angle or "jog" onto the short CVR extension, but clocking it correctly, and keeping it that way, would be difficult I would think. I also thought about having it tig welded onto the pump, but that creates other problems since I don't think the pump and motor are easily disconnected from each other. I also considered spacing it out as you mentioned, but I want to use the low mount alternator system, just as you did. I'll also be adding electric fans, so that may present a space problem if it were spaced out.

I am going to the Reunion, so I'd gladly buy the hose from you if you bring it. I don't know how well it would line up with my stock type radiator either, but there's only one way to find out. If I have to cut it and make a metal/stainless tube assy. to get to the correct spot, that is also an option. My engine is and will be limited on movement, so that shouldn't cause an issue with stress on the radiator.

Doug, I used two pieces of hose (which i wasn't totally keen on), but so far no problems at all.

I looked back at my thread when I did this and all the pictures have gone away (photobucket), so here you go.....

I was having trouble making the hose work that was stated in the write-up, so I set the original water pump and the new water pump next to each other. I figured that I just needed to mimic the downturn on the original pump, and then I could use the original hose from there. I found a hose at the napa that seemed to have the right amount of bend in it, and just used that section. Then I had the local exhaust shop make me a reducer, painted the middle of it black so it didn't stick out like a sore thumb.  Bottom hose is just a standard '68 Mustang piece from Scott Drake or similar.

Doug,

I'll put the hose in the trailer. Stop by when you can at the Reunion.

Mr. Brunson, thanks for the pictures. I've had to do that before and it worked fine. If you're worried about yours slipping apart from pressure, which I was, a few tack welds on each end of the pipe will ensure that the hose clamps and hose will not slip off. Just smooth them up and slip the hose over them, much like the rib that is typically present. I went to my local Napa yesterday and they had a whopping SIX hoses in stock. It's a small town community, so they don't keep a large inventory.

Tony, will you be driving the Maverick at the Reunion? Just wondering which car to look for.

When i worked for a industrial rubber company i made my own
radiator hooses for flatheads 37-39.
You need to make a "inner mould" out of a a steel tube or something like that the shape you want the hoose to be.
You dress the mold with one layer of rubber, one layer of cord, one layer of rubber.
Then there is this strips of fabric you twist hard around the rubber and cook it in a
autoclave .
So any one out there have a rubber company close if you make a
mold they will probably make hooses for you how thats for a buisness idea?

If the company i worked for still was running i would have made a mold and ordered ordered a batch and tried to sell them

Heo, I won't be going into the hose making business anytime soon..lol  I really have to give you overseas guys credit, necessity is truly the mother of invention, or in your cases, ingenuity. 8)

Would the -16 AN .875 hose size cause enough restriction in flow to not be able to cool a healthy engine? Any experience or suggestions with the adapters are welcome.

Hey Doug- Assuming you're considering the 55GPM CVR pump. My flow chart says it takes 12psi to move approx. 55GPM thru a 7/8 (-16) orifice. Since we're talking about using a -16 fitting on the suction side of the pump, my hunch is the pump would end up cavitating. Think about this... at 55gpm thru a -16 orifice, water has to move at almost 30 ft/sec. Definitely an efficiency issue! Bigger is always better when dealing with the suction side of a pump.

Doug I always had liked to fabricate things, Whats the challenge
buying parts for a third of the price when you can buy equipment and tools
and make them your self much more expensive ;D
When you decide to make your hose i will tell you how to get CJSHAKER
molded in along the hose 8)
Nothing beats when you have the hood open and someone asks, Hey where
did you buy that hose?  I made it.   .Made it out of what? Well out of rubber
of cause. Okay..and they leave with a blank stare ;D

Kevin, thanks for that. I am using the 55 GPM pump. It was just a gut feeling that the AN fitting would not provide enough flow, and I had pretty much gotten it in my mind that I would avoid that. Your comment pretty much seals that deal. I had supposed that if it were on the pressure side, it may not have been as big a deal, but not the suction side. Thanks again.

If you split a hose and cut a "patch" and strap it to the
hose where it rubs? not that elegant but ...? A quick fix

Doug,
Yes Maverick will be there ( Blue & White). My truck & trailer are a medium grey.

Heo, I was actually looking at some kevlar materials that would do the same thing, but be thinner and more wear resistant. I just may have found a hose that will work without resorting to that. It sticks out a bit farther than I'd like, but there won't be any fan blades to worry about, so that isn't necessarily an issue.
