Water pump has been weeping for a little while. Forgot about it until today. Thought I better check the coolant. It took 7 litres! Weep must have turned into a stream. Checked the oil, milkshake! Hope its just a head gasket.

Mine had a crack in the bore of cylinder #3 - what a mess.

It could be lots of things. Maybe only an intake manifold gasket?

Hi, Maybe it is the intake leak that is running down and looked like the water pump leak, we can all hope. Leny Mason

I know what your going through. My 63 427 lost the anti freeze into the crankcase. I started it and had 8#s of pressure, immediately shut it down and found milkshake in the engine oil. I don`t believe it was a head gasket as I would have had a hydrolock if it was. I`m more sure its a intake gasket at this point. still need to pull it down, at least I drained the crankcase but I want to flush it before I pull the intake off.

the last time i had water in the oil,it was a head gasket,i had a bad intake gasket once and it smoked and used oil,but it didnt mix oil and water?

Some details and questions:
-how long has this engine been run before the mishap?
-did you use Print-O-Seal intake gaskets (aka Print-O-Leak!)
-did you remove that troublesome OEM steel pin on the China wall before plopping on the intake?
-did the intake gaskets have that cut-out (tabbed) lower edge along the valley sides to accommodate hooking them to the head gasket? The tabs can hang up the intake.
-block or head or both decked?
-is the intake valve cover rail higher (lower) than the corresponding VC rail on the iron head?

Built this engine about 21 years ago. Been apart about 12 years ago for a look and freshen when trans was rebuilt. Runs (ran) like a raped ape. When I found this I had to start it briefly to move it. Started and idled normally. Its coming out.

Couple more clues. Drained the oil tonight, yep full of water. Drained the coolant, looks unblemished. Put borescope in plug holes. Plugs look great (better than ever with the efi), cylinders look dry............It's still coming out. ???

Only 2 places I can see this happening is an intake gasket or crack in the lifter valley, or possibly a bad sleeve installation leaking at the bottom. The only way I can see a crack in the lifter valley is if it freezes solid, and I don't think that happens where you are? So hopefully you'll just be replacing a bad intake gasket.

Yeh that's my thoughts too Doug and I don't have any sleeves. Its still coming out though. Might as well clean it properly & fix a few oil leaks. Might even go all girly & take some cam & converter out.

A friend of mine just went through a similar scenario. Water in the oil. Factory side oiler 427 block. Took it apart and couldn't visually see anything. Took it to the machine shop and pressure tested with hot water and found a pinhole in the cylinder. He then had it sleeved.

Jared has a good point to be made. Sometimes a pressure test may be the only way to find a leak. Case in point, Blair pressure tested my SOG block and found 2 pinholes in the lifter valley, evidently from the casting process. I would have NEVER found them if I had just machined it and assembled it. I know it's an aftermarket block, but just goes to show that some holes are so small that they just can't be seen by a visual check. I'm still hoping it's just an intake gasket though.

Friend bought a blown BBC freshened it upp with a hone and new rings
On upstart a lot of water in the oil. Tore it down no visual problem
then we pressure checked it water dripped out of one cyl
he had opened up a smal pinhole with the hone it sent a fine jet of water
on the oposite cyl wall

I am still leaning to intake as well. Low coolant, big steam pocket, popped inlet gasket. The oil smelled really burnt and even a couple of fittings on the oil cooler are discoloured. I reckon the only thing that saved it was the big sump and oil còoler. It was probably oil cooled for a while. But we shall see. Going to be fun pulling it out with a GV hanging off the back. I like to pull the lot.

Check back with us on gasket make/type. Also, check the gaskets around the water passages with a mike for similar thickness around the gasket perimeter. Object? To see if mis-matched intake/head planes eventually caused the leak.

Gaskets were whatever came in the Felpro full kit. As stated it was most likely very low on coolant. Had I kept up with the water pump leak it probably would not have happened.
