Title: Removing FE Valve Train To Remove The Intake
Post by: 427HISS on March 02, 2018, 02:15:35 PM
I'm replacing my 2x4 intake with a injection intake. Is it better to leave the rockers on the shafts by just removing the shaft bolts or should I remove each rocker ?

I plan on wraping each pushrod with tape so they won't disappear, then remove.

Always remove the whole assembly as one unit by loosening the bolts in small increments so as not to put stress on the shaft and cause it to break.  I always start with half turns on all four bolts in sequence, and do that until the tension of the valve springs is zero, then finish loosening the bolts and lift the rocker arms off as a unit.   leave the bolts in the stands to keep the assembly clocked, or you could possible reverse sides and turn the shafts up side down and the oil holes will be in the wrong place.  Some folks remove the push rods in sequence and reinstall them in the exact same lifters.  When re-installing the rocker arm shaft assemblies, make sure you tighten the bolts only a turn at the time each so as not to break the rocker shaft going back together.  Good luck.  Joe-JDC

I've worked on Chevy heads performing the tasks you wrote,  but not any rocker shafts. I've heard of people breaking parts with shafts, because they remove pressure one by one, breaking the shaft and sometimes even a rocker, so that's why I'm asking. Thanks.

I just replaced the cam in a " rebuilt" 391 FT, and it had 3 different length pushrods. 8 at one length, 4 and 4 of other, different lengths! They varied by an 1/8", and two of them bottomed out in the lifters and wiped the cam. It is surprising, but the power stroke event has a way of slamming a valve shut even if it is held slightly open! Pushrods can buckle a little.
It is good to check these things if you were not the one that assembled it last time!
(It did not need the odd lengths this time because the heads were properly done, but sometime in the past it must have had a goofy valve job. It was all just wrong)
As mentioned, also check the oil holes in the shafts.

That is crazy !    :o
Code: [Select]
Different sizes pushrods, somebody didn't care.

Everything went well and all looks great. The Dove rockers look awesome.

I just had,....to see how the injection will look, so I just laid it on top.   ;)
I'm painting the TB's either my blue body color or a anodized red or blue ?
