Hello all. Anyone that has had a dist custom curved. Can you tell any difference on power, starting, etc. I was told by a friend it made a big difference in his a mod dirt car. I don't know if it's even done anywhere but I have a couple places I can try if it's worth expense. Thanks all

you wont see it on a dyno , but you dont drive a dyno , and that's the key , how it drives on the street ( manners ) dynos start at where curved Dists usually end , so all a dyno needs is total all in before the pull , but on the street you drive 75% of the time from off Idle to 3000 , you could see a power increase if its over advancing ( racing condition ) where its stll advancing above 5000 ( and yes it happens ) , the bonus is it allows easier starting when hot ( compared to a locked dist ) and there is really no downside , and in a correctly curved vac adv and you can add 1-3 mpg , win win IMHO

Glad you chimed in Faron on the vac. advance as I've always recommended the same on street driven cars.

Ok it sounds like I should have my dizzy tuned up. Any recommendations on where to send it?

Send it to Faron, that's what he does.

Oh ok cool ,that's explains a lot.

Try Nelson Specialties info@nelsonspecialties.com He did special work for Fordfactory for over 50 years

If the engine is a custom build, then I tend to think who ever is driving it should be the one doing the recurve...figure out what your build likes for how it's being used. If it's a factory build then someone familiar with the specs can probably get a nice curve right off the bat.

Like Jay said....Send it to Faron...
Faron did a dist. for me, Duraspark for my 468, works well

Spinning up any old ditzy on a Sun distributor machine was the way to go but these testers are getting pretty rare. Without one, it's a lot of fooling around with weights, springs, etc. to get the curve one wants. It's a cool machine we used (at a shop) to test the strength of Vertex magnetos in our dragsters. Talk about sparks flying off the spark plug ends!
