Title: Sohc by pass
Post by: Leny Mason on January 31, 2018, 08:50:40 AM
Hi, we are starting on my engine and radiator for my Comet and I am not sure were it is, my engine is super charged so there is no upper radiator hose, so we will need to drill the intake manifold on each side and go to a stand alone thermostat housing,  I have looked at my two four intake manifold and I see no previsions for a bypass  hose Thanks. There is no bypass on the SOHC intake or water pump.  Best practice is to drill a few 1/8" holes around the periphery of the thermostat Leny, to let some water get through the cooling system even if the thermostat is closed.  I run a remote thermostat housing on my 69 Shelby clone with the SOHC, and that works fine for me - Jay

Thanks Jay, do you have any pictures of were you put the remote housing. Leny Mason

I mounted mine on the chassis bar next to the radiator inlet:

I would imagine those holes in the thermostat would be a necessity on the remote housing, or else the thermostat would never see hot water and work properly.

Actually, it will eventually open, because as the water in the engine gets hot the heat will transfer through the water in the hoses and eventually get to the thermostat.  BUT, then what happens is the thermostat opens very quickly and you get a big pulse of water through, which is hotter than you want because it took a while to get the thermostat open.  On my car the first time I put it together I neglected to put the holes in the thermostat.  The water temp sender was in the thermostat housing.  The first time the engine warmed up I was staring at the water temp gauge, wondering why it was moving so slowly.  Suddenly, BAM, it shot from 160 to 220 in a flash, then rapidly cooled down to 180 as it cycled through the radiator.  The holes in the thermostat prevent that problem.

Thanks I talked to John V today he said he never thought about a bypass in his Starliner, but he thought maybe it was because he had a heater and it might of been his bypass, but he never has had a heating problem, Jay are your coils something special you can sell me, I have though it would look weird  with separate coils but yours look nice, that way I would not need a distributor in the way of the blower belt thanks.
