Title: Crower Crankshafts
Post by: hwoods on January 28, 2018, 08:37:13 PM
Have the engine builders on here ever thought about approaching Crower about a group purchase of some forged FE cranks.  Crower's catalog only shows a Billet stock stroke crank for an FE motor in the $3,000 range

There are no USA forgings for the FE other than possibly a few Moldex cores that may be left.  Crower won't use Chinese forgings.  I buy an average of 10-12 billet Crowers per year, and I can tell you for sure that they have no plans at this time to revive US forged FE blanks.  There are no better offerings for an FE than a custom  Crower billet, but they are not cheap!

Here's a company that still does high quality forgings, but unfortunately their not in the USA:   https://www.alfing-crankshafts.com/en/automotive/overview.html

I don't know what it would cost to have a small run made but the shipping cost won't help.

I, still have an Alfing forged crank for one my Porsche/VW motors.  I also have an old SCAT, an exceptional quality Forged Porsche/VW crank from when SCAT was having cranks forged in Japan, but cost's were getting to high on the Japanese forgings, so they started doing their billet program.

I can still remember dreaming of buying a billet Crower for my 428 back in the late 90's.  Just couldn't even come close to spending $3K for a stock stroke crank even though I know it would have never had to worry about hurting it.

What is a realistic price on the Crower cranks? Is it closer to $4000? There is a Summit Racing listing for them, which was $3500, and $4200 at one point.

This is a Sonny Bryant 4.250" stroke FE crank weighing 66.5 pds, with 2.75 mains, 2.100 BBC rod jrls, and  center counterweights, and no Mallory was needed to balance.  I had called Bryant and gave them the crank number 52632. They said it takes 4 to 6 weeks to be built and a $3800 price.
