Some guys on Bangshift are saying the "Tail of the Dragon" highway is in between Bristol, Tn and Atlanta,Ga so there is a possibility that could be a part of the drive. I think it would be too good for HotRod to pass up...I hope. 8)

Hot Rod will go out of the way to purposely NOT take the direct route or the Interstate on the Dragweek drives each day. They love to send us all over the countryside, and they do try to use scenic routes when possible. The navigation challenges are part of the Dragweek experience too, that's why most participants try to have a Trunk Monkey along for the trip. They do route the competitors on sections of Interstate, the challenge of freeway speeds are part of being a street car too, and sometimes there isn't another option, but it won't usually be the primary route. Hot Rod is also trying to make sure the route each day is somewhere around 250+ miles too, so if the direct route is less than that they definitely will come up with something that is longer.

For me that's the funnest part of DragWeek. Hitting the back highways and seeing the country. Being from south central Kansas I never dreamed I would ever be cruising through Wisconsin or Ohio in my Galaxie. The last few years has been a little lacking in scenery so it will be nice to be in the Southeast.

Any steep hills will kill a high stalled auto.Should be interesting.

When I go to Beaver Springs I run some roads very similar to the Dragons Tail to get from western NY to I 80. On another note several friends want to do the Dragon on our Harleys. We have a couple of roads around here that we can practice on, not as long but very fun in a car or on a bike. Try Nittany Mt in PA real nuckle griper.

Tail of the Dragon would suck in any "drag" oriented car unless you were just creeping through it. It's an awesome piece of road though. Only time I've ever gotten car sick was on that road when I wasn't driving, pretty wild ride.

I hope they don’t pick that route, it was great on my motorcycle but would hate it in my mustang
That would not be a “fun” drive for me

One thing is for sure, it would be a car killer for a lot of guys. Personally, I think they would avoid it just for that reason. I don't think Hot Rod wants to purposely lose a lot of the heavy hitters, because many of them would not be able to make it through. If you've never been on that road, it's a tough one for any vehicle.
On the other side, if I take my GT, I would LOVE to take that route.

I've done the Dragon twice on a motorcycle and personally I won't do it again. Car or bike. Too many people crossing the yellow line into oncoming traffic and putting their bikes into the trees. No thanks
cherohala skyway and blue ridge parkway are in the area and are better / safer drives IMO

^^ THIS ^^ Having a late night Drag Week run on the Dragon would be a dumpster fire. You've got little or no street lighting and a difficult, twisty road with tons of places to go off. Add the lack of services for many miles as the icing on the cake. Give me a motorcycle on an early weekday morning and I'd be all smiles though!

i could not imagine them taking the dragon tail, way too much as far as scenic routes.i would do in several cars i think
-
They have sure taken some cool routes in the past, US 30 and US 40 and others that used to be main roads before the Interstates came along.
From the Tail of the Dragon videos I've seen it doesn't look any "better" than 199 from Grants Pass Oregon to Crescent City California, or the old 299 before they straightened it in CA from Arcata to Redding.
Or US 20 west of Bend Oregon and numerous others out west.

im going to say theres no way they will take that route.in a drag car you would get the impression that the curves were never going to end,and like someone said, theres no help for miles and miles.it would be a nightmare to take this route in a drag car.i just cant imagine them going that way

The thing is, Hot Rod doesn’t release the route until that day, so no one will know until then. We will just have to wait & see.

Sounds like that would really weed out the real street cars from the tube chassised Pro Mod type cars, but honestly, that is likely not something that Hot Rod would really want. I mean so many people would be devastated if only a bunch of 12 second and slower cars could complete the trip!
