Title: 65 Fairlane with a mustang 2 front end. can i get an FE in there.

wondering if i can put an FE in my 65 Fairlane with a mustang 2 front end. should i just scrap the front end and get a strait axel?
a friend says he has a 4x4 oil pan, will this help? has anyone got any tips? link to album of the car, got a 428 on bank ready to go. thanks in advance!

I moved your topic from the track results section to the general technical forum, I think you will get more response here.  The suspension is a front steer setup, right?  If so, the 4X4 pan may help, or you may need a custom oil pan.  I built a custom rear sump pan for my 64 Galaxie and it worked fine.  The spot on the pan below the oil pump is very close to the rack on my car, but it does clear.  I'm not using factory engine mounts, though, I custom built my mounts, so if you plan to use factory mounts there may be oil pan to rack clearance issues.  Test fitting is probably the only way to know for sure.  But the swap is do-able, at least based on my experience.

Since a 65 Fairlane has the same engine compartment as a 64, a FE can fit while retaining the factory suspension by using a Thunderbolt style kit, like that sold by Crites.

I believe rod and custom sells an oil pan for that set up -or at least one for a 64.

Hi, Fallguy I bought my pan from Brent on the FE Forum it does not look like the ones on the Rod and Custom sight, it is a Canton but it doesn't have the little deep front pan, mine is a 1964 Comet with a Mustang Two front end, but if you do a straight axle which I think are cool, use a axle out of a 1933 or 34 Plymouth or Dodge car or truck they fit perfect and use ford spinals and after market disk brakes,good luck. The axle from a first-design E-100 was often used as well. You'll be surprised at how poorly the car will handle with a front suspension design from the '30s and before.

Brother Lon did a Wilwood brake swap on his '67 Mustang/T-port and we took it out for a test drive. I was astounded at how much better my daily-driver TurboCoupe T-Bird handled than the Mustang. We REALLY have learned about suspensions in the most modern times.

If it was me, I'd get/make a set of motor plates to put the engine where it needed to be using a empty block and an oil pan.  Mock it all up, test fit, hammer to fit, bend to suit before trying to shove a complete motor in there.  Might find a trashed 390 block somewhere for cheap to use as a model.
