Title: 8 sleeves in a side oiler ok ?
Post by: 427HISS on October 01, 2017, 02:41:09 PM
A guy has a side oiler for sale that has all cylinders sleeved. Never hurt. He want's $1,000.

I've never had a sleeved motor, but with new cars with alum. blocks with steel sleeves, isn't that the same thing ?

427 Side Oiler Block.

 4.160 bore
   3.98 stroke
=428ci

Here's what he told me.

"I race Stock eliminator, usually most guys use the 427 cross bolt blocks and sleeve them because they are stronger than 428. I just went 10.67 @3280#. With this block. I just have too many engines".

It kind of depends on the sleeves, but in most cases it is definitely not OK.  Generally two adjacent sleeves in a block will split the block at the deck eventually, leading to head gasket failure and coolant in the oil.  There are some engine builders who will sleeve down a 427 block to 390 bore size, but taking a minimum amount out of the stock 427 bore.  What is the bore size of the block?  If it is stock 427 size (4.23"), or bigger, I think that block is headed for failure.

Sorry, I didn't notice the bore you posted at only 4.160".  This is probably one of those blocks that I mentioned that has been sleeved down, so it may be OK.  If you can find out how much the 427 block was bored to for the sleeve, and it isn't over 4.26 or 4.27, the block is probably OK.

The block is filled, for drag racing.

Not sure about FE, but a 351C - no way.  The cylinder cores are what supports the deck and with sleeves, I'd think the deck would washboard like a gulf coast highway.
