It all depends on condition, can you get any pictures? I'm looking for a 65 center oiler block currently.

$10,000 apart?  Yikes!!!  Don't know how many times I've come across stuff that's supposed to have X, Y or Z.  In this case you'd almost need a pre-nuptial agreement to protect your interests IMO.

You have to think of it as a collection of used parts, all of which must be refurbished. And significant parts of the collection will likely need to be replaced.

FWIW, my '64 came with a T-10. I twisted-off the output shaft on a granny shift 1-2 when the car was about two months old. There is a reason that FoMoCo went to the Toploader.

Well, all apart does allow easy inspection! LOL

Yeah, 10K w/o any machine work or new parts....that's a ton of cash.

Haven't kept up on FE parts prices but Jay's somewhat time-dated Hot Rod FE build did have then current prices.

Aftermarket block, SCAT crank/rods, alum. heads, maybe a used intake, cam/lifter kit....yeah, unless one must go nuts on machining, that $10K or a tad more gets you a brand new engine. JMO!

Here's Jay's 390 build; prices at the end.

Btw, anyone here have a quickie estimate of 2017 parts prices?

2015-2016 I built a stroked 390/447

-bored/machined/shortblock assembled by Mr Lykins
-racetec custom pistons, scat rods and crank
-bbm heads complete
-comp sft cam
-moroso t pan, hv oil pump,
-edelbrock aluminum water pump
-stock adjustables + endstands, solid spacers, new center stands, crane adjusters
-beehive valve springs+ tool steel retainers
-ati flexplate
-Blue thunder MR 2x4 intake
-2, 600cfm QF carburetors
-brand new duraspark
-BT cast valve covers
-fpa headers, coated

blah blah, I tried to get the best stuff I could for the price, was savvy with spending, and got really lucky when some stuff popped up
Lykins did the shortblock and heads, I assembled and did the rest.
Cost was a hair over $10k

I think if I'd compromised on certain things, there is no reason you couldn't put it all together for $8-9k depending on your spare parts stash

(freakin ATI flexplate is $300+ and I didn't really need an edelbrock water pump, dual quads is cool, but you can do it a lot cheaper).

I was following my brother through speech therapy today - part of his recovery from a severe stroke - and he said something interesting and on point. The therapist knew he had been in the car/truck business and asked him if an ad for a used but current model Challenger was a fair price.

He said that for a retail buyer the price was the LEAST important thing. If you buy a used or new car with the intention of keeping it for 5 or more years, the price divided by the period of ownership is much less important than the condition, as it is condition that drives the real cost of ownership.

He said that as dealer in used trucks, the price he paid was critical to him, but he would only own the vehicle for a few days to a month, so price was paramount.

If you intend to use the block for years, all that really matters is condition. If you pay $500 or $1,000 too much it is nothing compared to the value you will get if it is what you want. Add to that - how easy is it to find a good 427 block where you live? I was prepared to drive 740 miles (round trip) just to LOOK at a 427 block for sale (and one of the ears on the block where the bell housing mounded was broken off) - and it sold before I could start my car.

The other question is - why do you want one? For what I was doing a 390 block built into a 445 was more than I needed, but to be able to open my hood and look at a 427 would have been worth it.

Those are the questions to be asking.

all very good points  but  i think he is asking"barrett jackson" prices  for something that fell in his lap! the only big dollar parts are intake, carbs, exhaust headers oval air cleaner and block. everything else is meh. small valve heads cast crank good stuff but meh BTW i live 4 miles from chevy engine plant i really think i was hitler i my former life :(
