Title: Power rack flare
Post by: turbohunter on August 28, 2017, 11:18:03 AM
Hi guys
I'm in the middle of trying to figure out what type of flare this is and how to make it. It's not an inverted flare, it's flat.
Back story.
I have to lengthen and re route the rack steering lines around the oil pan, its tight in there.
Of course I figured it would be easy to do as I've done many flares before.
Wrong.
Problem
I've never seen this type of flare before and everyone I've checked with has same story.
I'm checking the web but haven't seen it yet.
Question
Is there a fitting that can replace it or what tool makes it?

If I can't figure out a fitting or a way to make that flare I'll prolly cut the tube and add on some AN.
I'd rather not as that may not look great.

Never seen that either.  But have been shown the "bubble" flare which seems to be more popular now, at least on foreign cars.

Yeah I wish it was something normal (even new normal) Larry.
Would be nice if there was a number or name or anything on the rack. I bought it as part of the front end kit many years ago and nobody remembers what it is.

I had the same issue, brake fitting though. I went to the local hydraulic hoses place and the guy knew what it was. He gave me an adapter fitting and a little copper crush washer to put in between them.

Maybe you have a similar store? If you don't, I'm sure they'd be willing to help you and send you something.

Haven't seen one like that, and maybe my eyes deceive me, but is that some sort of nylon washer in the bottom of that female fitting? That would make sense if it was. Only flat fittings I've seen, take an O-ring on the receiving end. Lot's of hydraulic fittings are made that way.

Hydraulic fitting makes sense.  Do you have a Parker store local?  Or even a small town version.

I have been to one hose and fitting store. They were flummoxed about what kind of flare it is. I didn't ask them about a fitting for it yet. Have one more to go to.
What you see in the bottom of the female side Doug is a formed donut that fits the flare end. It's not a nylon ring it's actually formed into the seat. That's part of the reason I'm not to sure that a fitting will seal.

That's an odd ball alright. Never seen one like it. Here's a thought, Marc. Last week I had a new hose made at my local NAPA. They cut the tubing ends (flare and inverted flare) off my old hose assembly and brazed them into special barbed fittings that could be crimped into #6 hydraulic hose. Worked slick. Looks nice too.

You're prolly right about that Kevin. I'm going to have to graft.

I think that I have a couple of -6 AN adapters to that fitting.  Do not know where they came from or why I have them

Found it thanks to my friend John.
It's called a Din flare and you can buy the dies to make it that fit right into the tool I already have.
