Title: Rack and pinion steering for 1964 Fairlane with FE Motor
Post by: hwoods on August 22, 2017, 04:48:22 PM
anyone know of kit, manufacturer or individual that has retro fitted a rack and pinion steering set up in a 1964 Fairlane with a FE Motor?  I can't find one.  Unisteer makes one for small block cars

If you Google 64 Fairlane R&P many vendors come up.

I have looked thru many vendors websites and contacted many as well.  For a 1964 Fairlane, big block FE motored car, none I can find show to make a kit for this application.  I have been told the Fairlane Geometry is different than the Mustangs, Falcon, Comets and other small and mid sized Ford/Mercury vehicles

Geometry is different and I would think a rack would interfere with almost any headers. There is so little room in these cars for the tubes to go.
I'm not sure what the Unisteer one is but other's I've seen on Mustangs/Comets, etc, use a huge clunky front wheel drive GM rack that bolts in to the old steering box and idler arm holes. Problem is it's 3" in diameter with meltable rubber boots right where there used to be a 3/4" tie rod. That, plus a steering shaft and UJoint running diagonal across where #7 and 8 tubes need to be would mean headers probably need to be made special for it and perhaps with some real compromises to flow or equal length..
