Hello, I can't stop looking at the Eddy X-66 cross-ram intake and need help being talked down from making an impulse buy on looks alone. My garage is FULL of impulse buys as it is. I'm telling myself this would look great on a 445 and the FiTech dual power adders EFI's.
I'm sure it would be down on power compared to my Preformer RPM, but can anyone make an argument that it could work to run not noticeable WAYYYY slower?
See how I asked the question, I'm really looking for any reason to try it. I just have enough cool paper weights. I'm sold on the cool look (that is important) but not as much as enjoying driving with no worry I'm gonna get there. Thanks all!

I know the pic isn't the X-66 intake but it's close and I had it on my phone when I posted this. Thanks again 8)

What is the seller asking?
-
I've seen them on EBay for 1,100 up to 3,000!!
Condition, if it comes with the linkage etc
-
I put one on a 416 with CJ heads, replaced a 428PI intake with a 735. We put 2x 450s on it with bigger shooters, C-6 / 3.70s in a Mustang. It ran great, was hard to tell much difference in power and certainly didn't lose any. With 2 600s it probably would have done better.
It's a lot of work for not much gain, but they do look neat
-
Not FE but had one on a 389 Pontiac same idea, ran 10.56 in a 64 GTO 3100 lbs with driver 2x4 chassis absolutely cool
-
I hope you do know that I read all the words in your reply but all my little brain understood was: BUY IT NOW! YOU NEED IT NOW!!
In reality, I'm seriously thinking of buying it and trying to get it to run with the FiTech's. The 1200 power adder is something like $1,500 and the dual 1200 power adder is $2,000.. so $500 gets you to play the cross ram game. The power adder version also comes with the Pro software that's laptop based and might help work out any of the kinks.. or should I say help hide the kinks.
Only one I can find right now (I don't need it right now) is $1,600 and that's about the average price. $500 to upgrade the FiTech and $1,000 to upgrade the intake +/-... that's $1,500 total more or less. If I thought I could get it to work 90% the Eddy rpm I already bought I think it's worth the cool factor. No idea how I'd get the linkage to work right and I don't see really anything as an air cleaner.

Do you have a copy of my book? There's data in there on that intake. If you are around 500 HP with your 445, that intake will work fine. I don't know about with the Fitech EFI though... Maybe a couple of carbs instead?
-
I do not and had hoped someone would bring that data up. I always feel a little left out when I read a reply and point to your book as reference.
Is it lazy down low? I see it's a single plane and thought maybe a 4hole spacer or super sucker if needed.
-
Linkage.
Make sure it has linkage.
I know you talked about it but is it there.
Did I say linkage. ;D
-
I've been reading as much as a can on this intake (this is the first step of recovery in the impulse buy dept) and have found 2 places that can help with the linkage but it sure isn't an off the self purchase.
You basically are building it from scratch. I see that as a major project in itself. And as I posted if it will only run good (or at all) using something like a super sucker that's $100 x2 to add to this "Looks cool" purchase.
-
the price is why I haven't tried one on my 62 ranchero
-
I have one for 289-302 with linkage the linkage is not that
complicated just a cross shaft with a arm for each carb
-
Any intake with a big plenum like that will require a lot of accelerator pump shot to get the engine moving. So, figure on some carb (or EFI) tuning to get it right. But I don't think it will be down on low end torque if the carbs or EFI are set up correctly.
-
Hope you realize that the X-66 is quite tall. What car/PU are you thinking of?
I'm saving a pair of 660 Holley's for mine. Those carbs are not street friendly.

It would go in a 73 F250. I figured it was tall and thought if I added spacers it be even taller but I do have some room under the hood. Do you know how tall it is? Or maybe an idea on how much taller it be then a performer rpm (have now).
Thanks
-
Way freaking taller LOL but, I bet it has a good chance to fit under a truck hood. We needed a Boss 9 scoop on a 67 Mustang, but that's a whole different animal
As far as low end, we didn't see a low end power issue, they are long runners which help torque, but as Jay said, you need a good pump shot if you foot tries to go deep into it in a hurry. A pair of blue pump cams would likely do it on a pair of 600s, worst case, go up a size on the shooter to get it there quicker. If you have a good timing curve and not overcammed, I doubt it would be that much trouble.

Measured my F-66 and M/T compared to my RPM both are about 2.5 inches taller.
But for the M/T you need the special Distributor adapter and modified Distributor.
Ford 3X2 Look great and are affordable as well
If you want a really unique intake look at a Weber setup or the one I have for my Low Hood car a F-68
I'm patient and haven't paid more than $400 for any of my Intakes. I just put a sign at Swap meets "Ford FE HiPo parts wanted" and they come to you.
Of course this is SW Oregon and no one knows what a FE is.

TommyT made one into a 4- 2 barrel holley's with two barrels right above each port if I remember correctly
-
Well...
All of my experience is with the M/T Power Ram. In Jay's testing it was well down on power from the Edelbrock ram.
Took some fiddle'n 'round with but basically you need a lot of initial timing and pump shot. The linkage is as simple as a door hinge and two rods going out to the carbs.
I drove my '56 T-Bird with a mild 428 and the Power Ram for several years, even in Los Angeles stop-'n-stop traffic with no real drama.
I did indeed "butcher up" my vintage M/T intake to fit 4 Holley 4412 2 barrel carbs. Intending to put that on my straight axle Comet project.
