Title: What size jet for oil restriction in head?
Post by: Dot Heton on May 07, 2017, 09:46:03 PM
I just got done with my cam break in and it was a mess. The valve cover gaskets leaked and after a while it started blowing smoke out of the exhaust on the passenger side. I'm pretty sure the oil was getting into it the valve seals. I need to restrict the flow to the valvetrain. What size jets do I need?

Also.
The intake was weaping coolant, the engine had a random miss. It was frustrating to say the least. I had the same miss in the old engine with this distributor so I ordered a new one. As for the intake coolant leak, I reseated this intake three times last year, it always leaked. I guess I need to get a new one. I'm ready to give up, i can't afford this hobby.

Ok I'm better now. I just needed to vent.

So what size jets are you using? Or I can drill a hole in some round stock.

We are often between .060 and .070 depending on type of rockers used.  Has you intake been milled/trued up?

X2.....check the intake for straightness.

Guys are too quick to say that oil is getting past the valve seals because the heads are filling up with oil.   That is actually the very last place I would look if the heads have good & fresh valve seals.  Intake gasket is usually #1 spot to check.

Unless one is using the old umbrella type seals, which one should not be  :)

As the two B's said....
check that intake.

Coolant leaking=intake seal
oil leaking via intake into cylinder=intake seal
oil leaking into intake/vac leak into one cylinder=misfire=intake seal

Every engine needs the intake test fit a few times while checking all the gaps before final install.

Not to high jack this thread, but what jet size do you recommend if using the Precision Oil Pumps rockers and stands set?

The block was decked and the heads shaved a little. The mating surface between the heads and intake wasn't parallel. What can I do? I can buy an RPM but won't I have the same issue? The intake I'm using is a Holley Street Dominator. I think it had a hard life on a mud truck before I got it. The valve cover bolt threads are wallered out and one stripped. I don't dare tighten them too much. The biggest problem is that I had coolent in the last motor that I'm 90% sure was the intake. I had it off three times last summer but couldn't get a good seal.
I guess I'll order an RPM and see how it fits.

Sense you use Mr. Gasket, do you know off hand what the head gasket restrictions were around 2000? These head gaskets came from a full engine set and compressed to .038". I forgot the gaskets part number but it does have a sufficient flow to the shafts.

I just use Felpro head gaskets on most engines.  Some get Cometics.

Yes I do keep an eye on what you full time builders post to keep up to date on things. On the other forum you said "I am a Mr Gaskets guy". What was that in reference to?

Intake gaskets.  I like their paper gaskets, like the 202A when appropriate.   They also make a nice 351C intake gasket.

My mistake. Thanks
