I bought this in a lot of Loncoln parts. The box was opened and it's part number corresponds to a 462 flexplate. The new flexplate has not been bolted up to anything. It fits an FE/MEL crank flange bolt pattern, is 14 3/16" diameter and has only 164 teeth on it. Is it a 462 flywheel?
Thanks

By part number it fits 430-462 MEL, 65/68 per Ford michrofiche. Are there any ID numbers on the part itself? Jim

That is all the information I have.

it is 462 with a cruise-o-matic trans (Lincoln version) Believe it or not the 462 takes a the same dia and tooth pitch ring gear as a small block 351

Against better judgement I did not remove my shoes to add up my 40 count marks. The flexplate is a 164 tooth piece, NOT 124. Thanks for the responses.

Royce, The flex plate that came with a 1965 430 I have here is a 169 tooth. I take it the FE starter drive was used until 1965 and the 1966 462 used the 351 starter drive?
-
Nope, It uses the later FE starter. Same tooth pitch, but different dia and number of teeth than an FE. We put a stick flywheel on Stan Palma's 510. I used an FE flywheel but we had to cut it down and put the 164 tooth ring gear on it to fit inside the bell housing

If the starter drive does not care about 5 less teeth, I wonder why they changed it? The 462 flexplate is lighter and does not use a bolt on ring gear.

The 462 tooth pitch(distance between teeth) is the same as later FEs.. The number of teeth on the gear is determined by the diameter of the flexplate. The pinion on the starter fits that particular pitch whether is is the bigger dia FE (or 460 for that matter) gear or the 164. Placement of the starter on the bell housing sets the position of the pinion to engage the ring gear properly.

That's what I was refering to.The 430 only had two or three years with the new starter design and flywheel. I was curious if there was a long term issue with the 430's 169 tooth not meshing properly causing abnormal wear.

Looks like there was a problem with a noisy starter, more than likely long-term issues if continued used.

Interesting.. I wonder how many of those revised starter pinion gears are left in the universe.. I had good luck with a FE starter and a 164 tooth gear on a 66 COM bell housing

Sense that worked for you I will hang on to the new one I have. I have a cluttered shop full of "might need it one day" parts. Will the 61-65 COM bell housing work with a 69 FMX?
-
IIRC the answer is yes.. Changing out a early fordomatic cruiseomatic equipped 50's Ford to an FMX is a pretty straightforward exercise using the Y block automatic bell housing

DOOOHH I knew that :o But i sold a 54 Y-block with Auto
for scrap anyway stupid me ::) Had a creepy feeling i did
something wrong :-[

Hopefully the MEL is no exception, Thanks Royce.
Heo, I scrapped 5 2 barrel intakes. The next month a man called me looking for one. Mine are free but he ended up paying $60 elsewhere to make his Varajet work with his air cleaner and hood. You never know what wierd obsolete piece someone may need.

You are excused.. 54 Y block stuff is usually throw away.. congratulate yourself it was not an aluminum bell, as you would have sent several C notes to the scrapper

No it was a castiron bell, Aircooled trans. The engine
had been upside down and the valvecovers had rusted
through from the inside so i figured it was not a beauty
on the inside
