hello everyone! I'm a new member and a loyal ford fan. I'm in the middle of construction on a 5 window coupe in which i have a 428 and a toploader 4 speed...I got the engine/trans from my father but he wants the bellhousing back because its the only one he has.. the one that is on it is aluminum and has the older narrow 4 bolt pattern. So i don't have a bellhousing. I see the $700 quicktime sfi approved on-line as well as various ones on ebay. It looks like there are many variables and i want to make sure i don't buy one on ebay that doesn't fit my combo. Anyone know what I'm suppposed to have? I see a C60A and a C5AA among others.. some say you need a small block toploader to adapt because of depth issues! HELP!
-
Hey...need to know what 4spd you are using. If its a small block one you can use the readily available and kind of inexpensive C5T truck one as its 3/8 deeper than the automotive one..
Lets start with what trans you have .....
I have never seen a aluminum FE bellhousing..It must be unique or aftermarket...(???)

Browell (sp?) or Quick Times are probably your two choices , you don't need a SFI unless your racing and going fast , seemed like my QT has multiple trans mounting choices but it's been a few years since I had it apart

Aluminum is likely an Ansen. You might look for a Lakewood scattershield. Now out of print but there must be some around. I wouldn't use anything except a scattershield.

The cost of QT has gone through the roof. Even finding a deal on an older Lakewood is hard to do.
It sounds like you have the early small pattern Toploader. That also has the smaller pilot diameter on the bearing retainer. It will likely be tough to find a good bellhousing for that combination. An early Lakewood might take care of it, but the pilot hole will be larger(like 1/4"). I think a larger bearing retainer will still bolt on the early case? Been a while since I had to deal with this.
If you don't plan on hot rodding it, you could get away with finding an old cast bellhousing(early Fe with small bolt pattern). I typically don't recommend that. But I understand paying the cost for a blowproof anymore is a hard pill to swallow.

see if you have the early 25 spline output shaft , you may want to upgrade the trans also .
-
Ok, I tried to attach a couple photos. To answer some questions, my toploader tag reads (RUG S 1) and by david kee's ID chart that lists 68 mustang 428. It is in fact the large input shaft I believe only because i have a small block toploader in my 65 falcon and the input shaft in that car has a longer snout and more splines and smaller.
-
just noticed you asked me about the output shaft ...not the input shaft. ill look at that
-
It should have a 31 spline output..I would look for a used scatter shield or a later stock ford automotive (not C5T) bellhousing..There is always the quick time bellhousing...Depends on your wallet and intended use of the car.

That aluminum bellhousing certainly does not look like any factory Ford bellhousing that I have ever seen. Does it have a brand name on it anywhere?
-
That aluminum bell' looks like a mighty rare piece. Perhaps you can talk Dad into having you sell same on E-Bay, split the revenue and use your end to fund for a QuickTime bell. Just a thought.......
-
If you have a RUG-S for a 68 Mustang/Shelby $$$, look for a vin stamp on the top of the front ears. You might possibly get enough out of that trans to buy you another one plus a bellhousing.
-
That's a RC Industries aluminum bellhousing used in the 64 Thunderbolts and Lightweight Galaxies.
The last two RUG S toploaders I've seen sold for $1600 to $2000. They might be shown on DK website as a 68 Mustang, but an S is a 68 Shelby GT500 trans.

Really.... I guarantee my father has no idea. He has just spent decades collecting Ford parts he thought he could use someday... The older he gets (73 now), the more he realizes he probably will never use this stuff.
-
That bell i made for coupe with a FE swet talk your daddy in to a deal of some kind ;D
-
i know right??!! Is there a chance this bellhousing was aftermarket? I dont know how my dad would've wound up with a T-bolt bellhousing. On the transmission tag there is also a "1" after the RUG S ... with a space like this ... RUG S 1 Does that 1 mean anything?
-
I don't know what the "1" on the trans tag means, but look for a serial number stamped either on the top of the drivers side flange or on Shelby's on the bottom of the transmission.
Some more aluminum bellhousings were sold by RC after Ford bought a whole bunch for the Thunderbolt and Lightweight Galaxie. There have been several reproductions of the RC bellhousings over the years.
