Title: run it first or change it first (oil)
Post by: rcodecj on May 16, 2012, 07:07:56 PM
Car sat 2 years. Oil has very few miles on it but doesn't look super clean any more. Question is:

1) Change oil, pre lube engine, start it

or

2) pre lube engine, run it until engine is up to temp, change oil

I would also say go with option 2.

I think oil changes based on the age of the oil are over-rated. If it only has a few miles on it, and it is not contaminated by water or gas, I don't care how old it is, i'd run it till it had a suitable amount of miles on it.

Is this your engine?  if so and you know the history, I'm with joel.... Just run it.

If you are buying an engine from someone, you never know how sludgy it is.  I change the filter, run it a few hundred miles and than change oil and filter.

Whats an oil filter cost $40?
