So, I changed over my system to add a PCV valve. Since I had the old hose that was connected to these valve covers, I figured it would be an easy fit. Somehow, this valve seems to just kind of rest in the hole. I can't remember how I disconnected it. When running, it makes a fairly loud sucking sound, which doesn't bother me so much, but I know I am missing something. I can't see how loosening the clamp will make it go in. Any ideas? See photo.

That sucking sound is probably a vacuum leak! Looks to me like you need either a larger OD PCV valve or a valve cover rubber grommet that fits snugly to your PCV.

Yep, vac. leak. May need a new hose to ensure the carb-side of the PCV valve fits tight into that hose. Be sure too that the valve cover side slips snugly into the VC grommet.

Ha! Yes, it is a vac leak.
That's my question really. How do I make that vlave snug?
I guess the answer is to replace it. How do I know what will fit that grommet?

My best guess is you need a new grommet. See my link above.

Put some duct tape on it. Permanently fixed! :)

BTW! Winner for calling the "carb-side" as the leak that was making the noise, but it was the connection to the hose. Little clamp tightening solved that. Didn't really use duct tape, I used black electrical tape, at the valve to the grommet. Yeah, it's good for now ... I have an old original 390 breather with a neck, but then it's breathing from both valve covers. Is that a bad thing?

If one cover, as stated, has the PCV valve and the other (as you noted above) has a push-on or twist-on breather, that's exactly the way it should be. See, air does need to move into the breather side, flow through the engine, and get sucked out via the PCV equipped valve side cover.
