Title: T&D or Dove HD rockers for BBMs?
Post by: MeanGene on January 07, 2017, 05:19:04 PM
Looking at options, and haven't seen much info on using T&Ds on BBM heads. Quandary is I already have two sets of Dove HDs, one new set and the other good used, which would eliminate the need to cut the heads. The BBMs look like they have almost but not quite enough, extra meat to install inserts for T&Ds without cutting the head, which would make the decision a lot easier, but if they would fit, would take a fair amount of work to accomplish- too bad BBM did not include this like BT did? Anyone run the Dove HDs with .800 lift SR with good results? What is actually needed to run T&Ds on the BBMs?

I haven't done any BBM heads although I do have set here for the near future. Basically it would be like the Edelbrock head as far as T&D rockers. Machine off the pads and connect the sub-plate with the head bolts and then bolt on the rocker stand to that. Now T&D does make a "street" rocker that will bolt on without machining, but that won't work with an .800 lift SR and the springs needed for that.

I have run DOVE on medium spring pressure etc. without issue, but never tried it with a serious cam and springs over 600#. So I would think the T&D race set-up would be the way to go. I have run T&D race rockers as well as several friends, no issues with the race rocker set-up. I even did it on a center oiler block, had to drill the lifter galleys for oil and oil through the pushrods, which all T&D race rockers do. The T&D street rockers can be oiled either way.

I did see where somebody did do what you were mentioning, drill/tap and bolt on a T&D rocker stand that was made for a Blue Thunder head. He did run a solid roller but didn't mention how stiff of springs he used. It made about 700HP so probably wasn't a cam and springs like what you are going to run. Check it out, i don't think you will save much money doing it that way though... He did a write up on BBM's website, here is the link and pictures/info...

Good luck! Maybe somebody will chime in and have better info for you.

No experience with BBM heads but when Brent built my Tunnel Port we tried using a set of Dove stands and Harland Sharp
rockers. We ran a solid roller with mid 600 spring pressure and around 700 lift. It ran fine but afterward when making some
other changes Brent found that the there was some fretting under the rocker stands. We were afraid to continue with that set up
because it was going to eventually fail.  One option would have been to try to cut the heads and run a race T&D setup but with TP heads you run the risk of hitting water so we made a change to a solid flat tappet cam and ran the regular T&D set up and it worked fine. Made over 700 HP  ;D
I think if you are going to run a SR with 800 lift and lot of spring pressure I think you will have to go to a race T&D.
Good luck

Not claiming to be an expert, but there are two types of T&D rockers, essentially race and street, and I put a set of street ones on my BBM heads without any modifications. They just bolt on.

Depends on what your doing, Gene. Big rpm's with a solid roller takes a gorilla valve spring. T&D territory.

I am running the street T @D S as well , simple bolt on , and hydraulic roller .. but not the lift and pressure youbare gonna have .. Bud
