Title: FE Motor in 1964 Fairlane
Post by: hwoods on January 04, 2017, 10:51:19 AM
do the shock towers have to be cut to fit an FE Motor in a 1964 Fairlane or will it fit without cutting the shock towers.  Sad that a mock up block and heads runs $500

Yes, even a 351W barely fits into the 62-65 engine bay.  A 302 with headers is a tight fit.  Probably the weirdest shock tower/front suspension design ever conceived.  If you not a member of the Fairlane Club of America, its worth joining - there are lots of technical info on their website that can be accessed if your a member.

I put a 390 into a 62 Falcon, chopped out the shock towers and all the suspension, put in leaf springs and a Studebaker pickup axle, used the Falcon steering box but made it cross-steering.

you need a Crites kit , not bad to do ... did one on my 63 Fairlane back in 1996 , still own it ..... if I had a do-over , I would trim the towers right to the coil spring for even more room ( I came to this conclusion after seeing Kurt Neighbors T-bolt , darn it )... lol

I think there is a strut assembly out there that is way smaller so the tower can be cut a bunch more, I will look I know I saw a kit some were. Leny Mason

Leny, do you maybe me AJE suspensions?? I haven't checked there website but I know they do Mustang/Cougar front suspensions. It uses a tubular cradle, tubular lower control arms, a coil over strut, and top strut mount. It allows the towers to be plated back pretty far for clearance.
