Title: Rust removal
Post by: AlanCasida on December 01, 2016, 10:37:23 PM
I recently picked up a 460(sorry!  ;) ) block from my brother that had been sitting in his dirt floor shed for about 15yrs so it was pretty rusty. I decided to try some stuff called ConquerRust to see what would happen. I soaked it for 24 hrs and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised with the results. This stuff came as a concentrated powder and I just added water. It is biodegradable and safe for the environment, according to them.

Oxalic acid (a white powder) is an excellent rust remover. Mix powder with water and let your object soak. Check it occasionally as it soaks. You'll be pleased.

I got it from Amazon. I bought enough concentrate to make 40 gallons and it cost around $250. It is reusable but I am not sure how many times before it used up.

Let me know before you drain the pool. I've got a bunch of Mercs that need a dip.

I tired molasses.  It did work but there are drawbacks.  Its smelly and sticky, even when used diluted.   When used for extended amounts of times with multiple parts the molasses can get moldy.  I paid about $21 for a gallon at Tractor Supply.  Evapo-rust actually costs a little less and works just as well without the smell or stickiness.  You can use the Evapo-rust for quite a while, don't cover it up - leave the lid off.  The water will evaporate but just add more water as you go.

I was actually looking for Evaporust when I went on Amazon but I found this stuff and thought I'd give it a try. I was looking at some stuff called DR X but at $37.00 a gallon it was too pricey.

Oxalic acid that's whats in the rhubarbs...Me and a friend
was going to clean up one of his Holly's and he said.. when mom
make rhubarb cream in aluminium pot they get all shiny inside lets
boil it in rhubarbs. So off we go picking some rhubarbs and  chop
them up mix with water and a holly in his mothers pot and start
boiling. Everything seems fine till his mother came home. What are you
guys doing? O  just some Rhubarb cream ;D ;D my friend replied
Ohh but its to thin you Ned potato flour in it let me help you and she
took a spoon and started stirring :o :o.....that's when we ,the Holley,
the pot and the rhubarbs was thrown out of her kitchen ;D ;D ;D ;D
We still laughs att that today when we remember it

A friend of mine made up a vat of smashed up watermelons that actually did a pretty good job. Turned kind of stinky and sticky after a while though!  :o

Yeah, my parents visited this past month.  They always remind me (and sadly my children) of stuff I did as a kid.
This time they brought up one of my brilliant ideas I'd forgotten about.

The school bus dropped us all off at the bottom of the hill.  I'd walk about a mile to get home.  Well there was this really nice river and a tunnel with a 4ft pipe under the road.
I was about 12-13 years old and spring was upon us so all the snow was melting.  Thus the river was REALLY roaring.
While gazing at the whirlpool on the upriver side of the road and seeing the water shooting out of the pipe on the downriver side it became clear to me what I had to do.  I figured the pipe run was only about 80-100 ft, I threw a stick in the river and timed it to see how long it took to go out the pipe.

So, imagine if you will, a 12 or 13 year old boy stripping down in the middle of the road, jumping off a bridge into a whirlpool and shooting out the other side 30 seconds later.
I thought it was awesome and did it a few more times before my friend's mother drove by on her way home from work and saw me.  She slapped me around a good bit for being an idiot and drove me home.

Makes me wonder sometimes how they put up with it all.

 ;D ;D ;D Sound like a good idea ;D ;D ;D i told my
mother a while ago that she is lucky that she dont know
all the things we did.  ;D
One Realy good idea we had. We figure out how to put
out all the street lights in the village and there is a side street
down a steep hill crossing the main road and continue down
to the river. So we came up with the idea .....Put out the street lights
wait till we se a car comming pour gasoline over a friends bike, light
it on fire and he run down the hill as fast as he can cross the main road
in front of the car and keep going in to the river third car that came was
the cops ;D ;D ;D ;D If there is a record in running with a Jerry can i
think i still hold that record ;D

KS

Most of the big box home improvement stores carry Bar Keepers Friend which mostly consists of abrasive but does have oxalic acid.  It does work pretty good at removing rust from machined surfaces by hand scrubbing.

Being young and immortal has it's benefits, no?  I try not to think back too much, easy to wonder how I ever survived some of my more brilliant moments.

Not that funny story but citrus acid is really useful in rust removal. It is used use as small pig vomit medicine in here
safe to use. With heat it removes rust in couple of hours.
bare steel its fine hard bolts spring steel and some cast iron its not fine it produses hydrogen porous in those.
And most beverage that you drink has citrus acid,or so its around here

Yes there is a special heat treatment procedure to drive the
hydrogen out of the bolts after you have electro coated them with zink
A must if you Crome springs or high tension bolts
Because they are diped in acid during the prosess

MMM yes but i am talkingn about rust removal not the fancy dip. This is for rust removal whatever amount water and about 4-5 % citrus acid.Add heat it will do it faster.Hard bolts springs and some cast iron will go shit in bath. And the better side of this is you can go and take zip of that juice in your coke or pepsi

Yes  its the acid that cause the hydrogen enbrittelment
