Hey guys need help, got a 428 stroked to 463, solid roller cam, all comp components, developed a nasty tick. took passenger side rocker cover off, intake valve on #4 had got to like .125 lash. so I reset but the set screw in the poly lock is .175 deeper in the rocker then the rest. did a cam lobe get wiped out, broken lifter, what the hell is goin on?
-
you need to just take it apart and find out ... anything else is just guessing, something went bad .... check rocker adjuster , roller tip and pushrod ends for wear .... pull the intake if that doesn't find the problem
-
Since it's a roller cam I'll bet its the needle bearings in the lifter. Better pull it apart and hope it didn't scar up the cam lobe...
-
thanks fellas, plan on tearing it down first week of November. will let know what is found.
-
ok which is the best brand for solid roller lifters? in anticipation I was needing a new set been looking around and have only found em from comp and crower.
-
Morel, Crower, Isky....

Welcome stroked67. Hopefully you didn't lose the needles out of a roller. I've only seen one in person that went bad. All kinds of stuff landed in the pan. A chunk got in the oil pump and broke the oil pump drive shaft. That was how the issue was discovered (no oil pressure). Lunched the cam too. What a mess.
As far as best solid roller lifter brands go.... I like the Crower with the HIPPO pin oiling feature. I used a set in my 504. Nice pieces too, but not cheap. Maybe some of the other manufacturers have incorporated the pin oiling feature into their lifters?
-
+1 on Crower with the HIPPO feature.
-
I think all of the manufacturers have a pressure fed lifter in their inventory. Crower has both, Morel has both. Morel has bushed lifters and so does Crower and Isky.
I agree, the pressure fed option is mucho goodo, *especially* for a street driven engine.

So I was able to get some time this weekend, got the rocker assembly and pushrods out no signs of unusual wear, or damage. Might get to the intake this weekend.
-
I have had a prob with comp lifters cracking at the nose where the roller shaft goes through and causing the shaft to either come out or the roller to completely come off. Had it happen twice. Switched to crane solid roller lifters and have had no more issues.
Comp cams

thanks fekbmax I will look into them!

So. Found the problem with my valvetrain. A roller completely snapped off. Cam fu$!ed time to tear it down and hope the oil filter did its job with the shavings!!
-
It also scratched the lifter bore. Is that something that can be machined out? Or is the block junk?
-
Depends. Some 'scratches' may not even need any work. A pic would help. A big old groove though would require a fix.
But, no the block will still be good as any one damaged (or all 16) lifter bores can be bushed to restore the bore fit.
