I'm converting my 66 Galaxie from auto to manual but not having much luck finding the clutch linkage. Has anyone tried a cable linkage? Mustang Steve says he has a kit that would work.
What years are the same as 66 for the factory linkage?
-
McLeod makes them.
Personally, I'd rather have a good old-fashioned mechanical linkage. Next to that, I'd do a master/slave (not hydraulic TOB) setup.
-
Curious Brent why you don't like the hydraulic set up.
-
Years of experience has shown me that hydraulic throw out bearings have the greatest risk of leaking....
-
I also much prefer the factory style mechanical clutch linkage. My Fairmont drag car came from the factory with a 4 speed, so it was already equipped for a cable clutch mechanism, but I chose to make up a mechanical setup, closely copying the clutch linkage in my 74 F350. It works great. My 85 Mustang drag car, and now my Fairmont with the SB Ford engine have cable clutch linkage, but I much prefer the feel and operation of the mechanical linkage. Plus even with the SB Fords, it takes creative routing and securing to keep the plastic cable away from the headers, a much larger FE would be a fair bit tougher. I know a few guys that have tried hydraulic throwout setups, none seem very happy with them. Between trying to stop leaks, getting the bearing shimmed properly, and again, routing the hyd. line while avoiding the headers, caused numerous headaches. Both my 2010 Ranger and 1999 F350 are factory equipped with hydraulic throw out bearings, and seem to work fine, but both still have the original clutches. I understand that when it comes time to replace the clutch(es), they can be a PITA to replace and get working properly, especially bleeding the system.

Thanks guys.
I'm stuffing an FE in a '66 stang and am trying to come up with a reasonable system.

Personaly IF i do a new linkage i do master slave hydraulic

I don't see anything on McLeods web site....?
What years factory linkage will fit my 66 Galaxie?

How does one fab their own mechanical linkage? Is the reason that no one makes these parts because it is simple enough to do yourself??? Why is clutch linkage so hard to find when anyone can buy anything on the Internet? Am I not searching with the right words?

Im not sure but i think 65 to atleast 70 fit your 66

Yep, your Google search came up with Fairlane linkage, corvette linkage, Chevelle linkage, mustang linkage, nova linkage, universal hydraulic linkage but no mechanical linkage for a 66 Galaxie.
-
Yes, and I knew that but.....fabrication of a few parts, adaptation of Fairlane pedals and mosty off-the-shelf unmodified Ford parts will get you what you need. Hot rodders adapt what they need to get the job done.
-
I have the correct pedals for my Galaxie. It's just the linkage that is eluding me...
-
Hey ewo357 why don't you put a wtb (want to buy) thread in the classified section of the other FE forum. Lots of traffic there with lots of knowledgable guys.

I would also fab up the parts, even using a Z bar from something else. I hate cables and anything hydraulic for clutches.
-
What other Z bar would be good to start with to fab around?
-
I had a monkey-motion, would hardly work clutch set-up in my '63 F-100/390 when I bought it. I sorta lived with it for a while since I was busy sorting out other problems. (The '63 was not available with an FE engine. You had your choice of a '6' or a 292. Mine started life with a '6' with an automatic.)
I finally decided to wade in and over a period of time I changed almost everything. And that's the point. I would have been better off to make the 'Z' bar from scratch. Everything I did to the factory piece was almost right because the thing was only almost right to start with. The upper arm and the lower arms were not in quite the right place and not quite the right shape. I should have cut them off and made new ones.
I used stainless all-thread and stainless Heim joints for the connecting rods above and below the 'Z' and bushed the worn, egg-shaped hole in the pedal arm with a steel item that I sourced from Hurst. Any tiny bit of slop was seriously exaggerated in the movement of the set-up.
I wish you good luck.

I used hydraulic Master/Slave parts from a 57-60 F-100 when converting my 65 F-100 to manual. Had to fab a bracket to mount the slave cylinder onto the FE bell housing. Once I got the pedal situation figured out it has worked great. As for the pedal I ended up pulling another brake pedal assembly from a junk yard and cutting off the unneeded material.
-
Can you get pictures of what a '66 Z bar looks like? Does it look somewhat like a '64? Maybe just narrower across(between motor and frame) but some geometry?
-
I'm using a hydraulic set-up with a slave cylinder. I finally got it all sorted out and it works great.
-
I have built many hydraulic conversions.FE,SBF,SBC, Y-block ,Chev 409, Using master and slave
From Volvo Amazon (girling) Last one on a Y-Block in my Rod
Works perfect
