Title: temp gage

my temp gage quit working .it is aftermarket and has a probe that screws into the intake of my 428.what could have happened,the hand or pointer stays on 80 degree and dont rise as the temp comes up

From what you've said it's a mechanical gauge? Mechanical stuff breaks.

Thump it and see if it responds.  I do that in the race car a lot, because I'm too cheap to buy a new gauge just yet.  Usually it's a problem with the capillary tube, but still requires a complete gauge change out.

The mechanical gauges use ether (sure smells like ether, which is wonderful) so if it springs a leak at one of the factory sealed joints, it will leak out and vaporize.  Once its gone the sending unit is dead.  After enough thermal cycles and vibration/fatigue they eventually will fail.

  thanks i guess its time to get a new one,i will try flipping it just to see if it responds,but i will get another one.i have to know what temp im running
