What are the flow characteristics of the C0-D castings compared to later stuff like C4-G, C6-R, C8-H, given same valve sizes? Unmodified ports.
-
~220 cfm with 2.020-2.035" intake valve. Been a while since I flowed anything that old, but those numbers should be close. The later heads ~230-235cfm as cast. C6-R with larger intake valve will go into the upper 240s. CJ size valve will net ~250-256 cfm. Joe-JDC

I only clicked on this because I thought it had something to do with the song.

Thanks, Joe. I'm trying to figure out if the increased compression from the small chambers offsets the lower flow, in a 390 with a 280-ish adv cam. How much do you think CJ int and ex valves would bump that? Bowl blend?

I listened to Dr. Demento when I lived in L.A., but only on occasion. The song to which you refer did not ring a bell for me. However, there was one famous song in that vein that I heavily identified with. It spoke to the very essence that is me:

OK, can we now get back to the TECH question in this thread? And brush your teethses, y'all smell like you've had your ears boxed by your wives.

Then there was country Joe and the Fish, but I guess that's another thread...

Argh. This forum needs a Grassroots subforum.

For Midnight Confessions.
Yes I swallowed the bait.

Or Temptation Walleyes, another fine tune. Sorry about the thread FElony, I'm old and easily distracted ::)...............

And I resemble that remark.
We'll see you after detention.

Argh?... that reminds me of a joke. A pirate goes into a bar with a steering wheel attached to his belt buckle.
Bartender says "hey, what's up with the steering wheel"?
Pirate says "Argh, it's driving me nuts.

I took a fish head out to see a movie- didn't have to pay to get it in! 8)

Roly-poly fish heads are never seen drinking cappuccino
In Italian restaurants with Oriental women
What was this thread about?

In my opinion, a small increase in flow is usually more beneficial than a small increase in compression.
Now, if those old heads truly have a more efficient chamber in addition to providing more compression, then maybe......nah, I'd still go with the flow.

put big valves in the C0E's and be done ... Royce P had some sweet pictures of a COE with 2.15/1.65 that were beautiful

Some years ago I had Jim Dove make up a set of heads for a project I was doing. I had him use his 'F-5' design with the 'ice cream scoop' valve bowls, his Type 3 raised exhaust runners, and the early machined combustion chamber shape. Wayne Kuchtyn massaged the heads including opening the CCs a bit, and we used 2.100-1.65 Ferrea valves. The first full pull on the dyno showed 498 HP at 7500 RPM. The shortblock was a +.030 390. We used a matched Dove 'spider' manifold with an 850 dyno carb.

Have never seen "E" heads. These are C0AE-D's with the purported 60cc heart-shaped chamber, use on 352 hi-po and Police engines. C0AE-C's are the large chamber castings used on standard compression units. Former N54 Hollis Franks (RIP) had a set of D's on his 427, but I cannot recall any info about them, or performance results.
Since the aftermarket will never cough up a good chamber for the 390/352, I'm just trying to figure out a combo, also using steel shim gaskets I have for small bores, still in the Cal Custom blister pack.

I did not think anyone under 50 years old had ever heard of the Grass Roots , or most , even the FE
