Title: Damper recommend for street build
Post by: ChiefDanGeorge on June 10, 2016, 05:07:08 AM
I'm having choice overload on picking a harmonic balancer for my stroker build. This is going to be a street/highway cruiser. I searched the forum but seems like most of what I was finding were for race setups. What are you street guys using?

I have a Professional Products on the 428. Works great as far as I can tell.
Has not fell apart yet anyways. ::)

I used a Pioneer stock replacement on my 445 (it's the later truck/CJ style), and a Professional Products non-SFI on a recent 396, both came in spot on the timing marks and my 445 balanced up very nicely

I will echo the above responses.....Pioneer, Professional Products are good choices.  I also use quite a few Powerbond balancers.   For a street build, any of the 3 would be just fine.

I like the pioneer if stock appearance is of a concern .The professional products balancer I have the numbers and marks are almost gone .Come to find they were just painted on no etchings or stamps for either numbers or marks .I am going to need to install a timing tape pretty soon although I can still see the marks good enough to set my timing and both are holding up my money is on the pioneer .

Pioneer.  They also make an SFI version.  It is a little thicker, but spacing is still the same.  I like more damper with more stroke. If you are not going ATI, the Pioneers are the next best in my opinion.

I've gone away from the Professional Products parts and generally use either a Powerbond or a Romac on street style builds.

What about rebuilding an old one? Also related is the crank spacer, mine has a groove in it from the seal, are these available? Sorry to hi-jack.

You can have them rebuilt.  I have done this for restoration style rebuilds.  The balancer spacers are available new, although they don't look old.....but you can use a spacer saver if you need to.

Do you have a source or brand name for the crank spacer?

I don't think an aluminum one would last but I don't have any experience to back that up.

Aluminum is geared more towards limited use such as racing. Wouldn't recommend it for Street use.
Jmo.

Most of your aluminum balancer spacers are hard anodized and will do pretty well, but they won't last like a steel one will.

I have had problems with the fit of the aluminum spacers.  On the two I have the anodized coating is on the inside too, and it is thick enough to cause an interference fit.  I've had to heat them up and/or  pound them on to get them installed.  On one of them I tried to turn the ID a bit larger on my lathe, but that coating is hard and didn't cut very consistently.  Still got it to work, but it was a lot of screwing around that I've never had to do with a stock spacer.

Same here Jay.  I have a small flapper wheel on a mandrel and I use that to clearance them when I use them.....been a while though.

The spacer should not hinder the acceleration of the engine by using iron.  Nothing to be gained by going to aluminum there.  A pioneer sleeve repair will work well with the stock iron spacer.  Cheap, and available at all automotive parts houses.  Joe-JDC

Where do you guys source your harmonic balancer bolt? ARP has a ridiculous price on the one they sell.
Looks like Fastenall has 5/8-18 2" for around $2.

You'd be surprised.  I swapped out a new steel spacer for an aluminum one on the dyno once.  Gained 47 hp.

Just kidding.  ;)

Why not reuse the original bolt?
