Post by: thatdarncat on June 05, 2016, 12:28:50 PM
We've touched on the Ford GAA WWII Sherman tank engines before - this showed up on BangShift recently, pretty cool video.

I always liked these engines, and the history behind them. Ol Henry had people in Spain during 1938 and 1939 and was made aware that the Germans were testing an advanced fighter Messerschmitt built. Henry's sources somehow managed to get 4 of the German engineers to defect and come to work at Ford where they designed the 12 cylinder aircraft engine complete with mechanical fuel injection. The engine was tested by the Army Air force  and found superior to what was available in that time period, but politics dictated a more conventional engine approach without the injection. The tank engine used carbs at the request of the Army.

Glad they didn't run it too long or they might have had exhaust valves dripping from the heads. My dad was in the 3rd Army.I'm sure he saw one or two of these.

Here is a really good info link to the Ford GA series of engines.

IMO, Ford got "jobbed" in this case, and I believe the decision not to go GAF actually hurt America's war efforts.
