Title: should i be concerned
Post by: fryedaddy on May 30, 2016, 07:58:36 PM
i adjusted my valves on my 428 and i thought i would crank it with the valvecovers off.i thought oil would go everywhere but it didnt.oil pressure is good.i could see a little oil traveling on the shaft, everything was oily and oil is puddled up in the corners, but no oil was flinging around.

I'm curious, what made you want to start the engine with the valve covers off in the first place? Maybe you should buy a set of Jay's Lexan FE valve covers.

some people set the valves with the engine running.i was just double checking them for noise or anything loose.you didnt answer my question.no negative comments please.i might not be the sharpest pencil on the forum, but i just wanted to know how much oil should be in the rocker area

I'm sorry you took it as a negative comment, wasn't intended to be. I never knew some people adjust rockers while the engine is running, that sounds like a horrible idea but I've never adjusted rocker before. I do know however that accurate adjustment of the rockers requires a feeler gauge and I can't imagine messing around with a feeler gauge while the engine is running.

Jay posted a vid of his clear valve covers and at idle, there really isn't a lot of oil being splashed onto the walls of the Lexan. So you're probably safe. From other videos I've seen, the oil started to really flow once the engine was higher in the RPM's. I'll shut up now and let someone else chime in.

Ah yes, hydraulic rockers are different and a feeler gauge won't do any good. If I remember correctly, what matters for them is spring pre-load.

Would not be worried - I have the heads blocked and oiling through the push rods.

Like you started the engine with one cover off for a 'look see' and it took a while for oil to come out of the rocker shafts and when I revved it up, oil overflowed the heads.
