Title: fe engine paint
Post by: fryedaddy on May 24, 2016, 04:06:13 PM
i know everyone likes or uses the ford blue engine paint esp on restorations.i had some old 390s that had the gold paint, but i like the old dark ford red.it looks good with black hoses belts, pulleys and even black valve covers.i dont care much for the look of the ford blue, unless its a must on rare restorations. at the engine shop they just assumed i wanted blue.when i told them i wanted ford red,he scratched his head and said, ill have to order some.i think the fe looks better dark red  tham any other color!

That's Y-block red. Mopar has a very similar engine color.

your right is is y block paint. my dad had a 56 crown that was used in the movie coal minors daughter.thats how i started liking the red color, and yes it does look alot like mopar red,but it looks great on a fe if your not worried about being original color.i had a 63 1/2 galaxie that had a red 390 in it,must have been painted that color when the guy i bought it from had the engine rebuilt

Just make sure that you don't get the paint that is orange/red, it looks too much like the Chevy color, and a Ford should never be painted that color!  Some of those Chrysler paints dry an orangeish red.  Your car, your choice, but most 390's were either black with gold accents, or blue from the factory.  Joe-JDC

So is there a question here? Seems like you have decided and while it's likely immensely unpopular it is your choice. Personally, I don't care for the lighter Ford Blue that much however when it is correct for the application then it looks right. I  use the VHT Dark Ford Blue that is allegedly a correct color but really has a purple tint to it. Black looks correct if the timeline is right but Red... well, it's your motor.

In the early nineties used that red paint and mixed in with black. Headers , thermostat ETC. looked ok. Motor is now black, Hey there is an ass for every seat if you like red go for it

Ford engines should be black. My '64 427, my '65 'K' Mustang...

Goes good with chrome and aluminum.

Both ford blues make me think of industrial pumps and tractors. I was researching AMC metallic blue, it's really a great color but won't go with my red truck. So it's either red or black for me and I already have a new can of black just sitting here.

I shoot all my engines with Duplicolor Old Ford Blue.  Just my preference.

VHT Dark Ford Blue which actually doesn't look Ford Blue but since this is about personal preference, I like it anyway.
