Title: Carb size, 600?
Post by: FloridaMack on May 11, 2016, 08:58:34 PM
I have a 6 month old Edelbrock 600 on my 390 now. The 428 should be going in next weekend. Not far from stock and will never be past 5500 even on a drinking night, maybe never past 4500. I like the Low RPM torque, I tow and DD, not racing this 4X4. Lift is 486/512  and duration is 282/292, will the Edelbrock 600 be enough carb? I do like the way the quickfuel looks, so if I go bigger I would try the QF750. But,,,Im cheap and towing and looking for MPG. Any suggestions?

I think the Holley, even if it was a 600 will make more power, and a nice 3310 750 vac sec will make even more, but if you run on the bottom end of the RPM scale, the 600 Edel will likely do fine too.

Honestly if its a good carb and you are happy now, I'd run it for a while and see what you think

I had a 735 cj carb on my old 72 f250 4x4 with a 428, streetmaster, headers, and cj cam. Absolutely one of the best running carbs I've ever had. Great power and mileage. You can find replacement 735 carbs for pretty reasonable if you watch, I just got one from the other fe forum a couple months back for 250$ in great shape.

The Ed 600s are nice carbs - great on the street.  Electric choke works well, better than my experience with Holley.  Yes, a 600 DP List 4776 will ET better than an Ed 600 on a specific engine - no, a List 1850 vacuum 600 will not run better and if it's street, the Ed will kick the 1850s butt in drivability and mileage.  Been there, run that - more than once.  NOTE - for street use I would use a non-metallic spacer between the carb and intake.  If you are not blocking the crossovers that heat the manifold, add in a heat shield.  The Eds - and the Holleys - in a street application with current fuels like to percolate in the heat.  That's here in Texas where the asphalt street will be 140F+ in the summer, your climate may vary.

I don't mind the Ebrock 600 on stock type builds  once tuned in ... it would be interesting to flow the Ebrock as my bet would be the Ebrock 600 is way down on flow compared to the Holley even though advertised as the same 600 size ...... myself I'm a Holley guy in general , but for the right application the Ebrock's don't bother me one bit , for what your doing either would be fine but I would probably go with a 735, 750 or 780 if I had to buy something and didn't have a Ebrock sitting there

Thanks guys, I will try the Edelbrock and see how it goes to start then, I do run a 4 hole plastic or neapreme spacer and the heat crossovers will be blocked. Florida is not much cooler than Texas. The Holley Street Dominator may help keep it cooler too being aluminum? Although it is single plane it has small runners and works decent on the 390 I run now. If I had the spare money I wouldnt mind trying the Performer intake, but this one is already mine. Dist choices next. Waiting on UPS to get the Flywheel before I pull the 390 out of the Truck, my Jeep shakes so bad at 45 I hate to drive it daily for long.

That SD is a good manifold.  In the end, you may want more carb, but I think you will like the combo as much as you liked it before

FWIW, I ran both a 428PI and a SD on my truck when it was a 390, both ran great, had a Performer 390 on it for a single day.  You have a great manifold, your added cubes will likely even work better

I use .015 stainless shim stock to block  the crossovers on any aluminum intake engine I use.

Also, if you really want to give the Holley crowd a rash just for fun - try running two Ed 600s.  My 302:

Looking for mpg and the duration on the cam doesn't match really. But if it was me (like most of the guys stated) I would run a Holley 725~780VS carb. You can still pull some mileage with it. I did out of my 428 in a lifted 4x4 with a moded 810Cfm DP. JMHO

If you only run it to 4500,a 230ish @ 050 cam is WAAAAY wrong...

i used to have a holley 650 double pumper on mine.great carb.it got good gas milage and when you kicked it in it will surprise you.i loved that carb.i later built my engine up and switched to a 850 dp,but a 650 dp is what i would use on your set-up,if i were you
