Thanks for posting that Bob, I hadn't seen it.  Actually the car does not appear in the April or May issues of the magazine, but I'll bet it will show up in the June issue (which is delivered in April).  Rob Kinnan got everything right in that article, too, which was great to see - Jay

Every thing except this."they have to drive, not trailer, the race car, and support vehicles are allowed".I'm sure just a typo."No name" heads is a priceless statement. :)

Yes, that's right, it should say support vehicles are NOT allowed.  Everybody knows that right?  ;D

Jay,

How the heck do you change the bore centers on a block? Is the change so small it makes no difference at the crank? Where would you get heads to sit over the bores?

I'm astonished at the things you do.

Jay,

How the heck do you change the bore centers on a block? Is the change so small it makes no difference at the crank? Where would you get heads to sit over the bores?

The trick is in the pistons.  You have to have enough room between the pin bosses so that the rod can slide over on the pin, to compensate for the bores being off center.  So, with the SOHC's block, the inboard bores are moved outboard 0.035", and the outboard bores are moved out 0.105".  That's not really that much, so making the rods fit the pistons wasn't a big deal.

The piston dome is a little tougher; basically the dome has to match up to the heads.  So all the pistons in the engine have offset domes.  The bore is so large that there is room to do that, and the SOHC chamber is only about 4.1" in diameter, so wth the larger bore there was room to move the piston dome.

The pistons are expensive, but running a really big bore has a lot of benefits, including more cubes and more room for the valves to breathe.

Maybe somewhere on the "no-name" heads you can stamp them with DS for the guy who paid for the casting patterns.

Hands down the best featured car article I've ever seen in Mustang Monthly. They seemed to always goof the technical details up in the past, but got them right on Jay's Shelby and provided plenty of pic's of its hard core mechanical details.

Jay keep your eye out for a high quality print copy of the article on a nicely done wooden plaque - my friend received one of his car when it was in Mustang Monthly and the maker discussed price after it showed up.

WAG Jay did you supply some of those pics, or were they from under the Hot Rod Mag photographers files?

I supplied a picture of the interior, and a couple of shots of the hood scoop.  Dom Domato took the rest of them on the last day of Drag Week.

Did you do the math to figure out what the forces would be trying to tip the piston to the side when combustion occurs? I imagine that a tenth of an inch would produce quite a significant moment of torque.

Obviously it hasn't hurt the motor.

I didn't do the math on that, but I did check the rod bearings and pin bores after the first couple of go arounds with the engine.  If there had been significant rod bearing wear that was off center, or pin bore wear, I think I may have been concerned, but I didn't find any.  As far as I can see there are no ill effects...
