Title: Finally got the new roll bar in
Post by: afret on April 08, 2016, 06:47:05 PM
It was kind of a pain to get around the deluxe door panels with the door bar.  S+W forgot to send the short lateral supports so that was another problem.  Seems like these projects never end up going very smoothly.  LOL Still need to get the seats in there.

Looks good Earl.  When I did my Mach 1's cage I put some small bends in the side bars, to get past the deluxe door panels where they stuck out.  Looks like you figured a way to get by without a bend; I like it!

Thanks, Jay.  Wish we could have done the door bars without a bend but had to put one at the bottom to raise it a bit.

Earl, I have a couple quesitons, did you have to remove the emergency brake pedal to fit that side bar? Also, I assume you were able to weld the rear bars to the main hoop before installation of the main hoop? It would be near impossible to TIG weld the rears at the top after the main hoop was installed. I'm guessing it was fitted, tacked, then removed for welding?

No, the parking brake pedal is still there but I have to use my right foot first to push it down a bit then I can use my left foot to fully engage the brake.  I ended up adding the 1 1/4" vertical support at the door bar pivot since I thought there might be a lot of stress on it if someone leans on the open door bar with that long lever arm.

The rear support bars were welded on after the main hoop was welded in.  We just used a large piece of aluminum sheet between the main hoop and headliner and put a plastic wedge between the aluminum sheet and top of the main hoop to give some air space before welding.  We've done that a few times with no damage to the headliners.

I'm going to a slightly smaller steering wheel to make it a bit easier to get in an out since these seats have an elevated area right below the steering wheel in front of where the anti-submarine belt comes out of the seat bottom.

Thanks, I'm looking at installing the same S&W system in my car this summer. Looks like rolling the window up or down is something that needs to be decided before closing the door..lol

I thought this was a race car can you hear those speakers in the door when your going down the track or do you listen to the radio in the staging lanes??

Yeah, I should have thrown those out years ago.  The radio has been gone for about 30 years.  LOL

When I saw the speakers it reminded me of Ken McLellan's Cobrastang. We were in the staging lanes and I was in Ken's car and he still had the radio in the dash and I asked him if it worked and he said yes but no antenna. I was giving him a hard time about it and the next race when we were in the staging lanes he said get in. He had run a wire inside up the windshield pillar and now we could listen to music while we were waiting!!  Ken also did not trust a line lock and would use a stick to hold the brake pedal. I would have liked to have an in car camera seeing him use the stick and short shift his 4 speed into second before he past the Christmas Tree.
