Title: Best head for a 352 build
Post by: chris_r on March 16, 2016, 02:54:35 PM
Im building a 352 with custom flat top and i want to get some good gas mileage out of it. I have a set of h heads and g heads. i like the h heads for the compression but i like the g heads for the exhaust port. What do you all think? I would like to hear from the capt. if you have time.

What car are they going in? What year are the G heads?

H heads (or later D2T heads) may have best velocity and smallest chambers.

are the exhaust ports higher on the G heads? That is good, and a truck has lots of room for headers (headers help with gas mileage too), as does carb choice.

Id choose on which heads are in better shape, or on what compression ratio you need.  the 66 heads may be 72 to 74cc and if the other heads are C8's they may be 68 to 70cc. depends on chamber.  smaller is usually better for a 352.

Ive been planning a 352 build for a while, and I'll cast my vote for the C6AE-U   GT390 heads.....they have the soft D chamber that's listed at 67.1 to 70.1cc's and the smaller velocity ports that I think 352 needs.  C7AE-A  GT's would be my next choice.

I'm wondering since you're going with custom pistons whether you're using stock length  6.54 inch or the shorter 6.488 rods?    I thought if I went the custom route , I'd have them made for the shorter rod since there are Hi performance  rods available and to get a slightly more favorable rod to stroke ratio.

I also think that the Edelbrock Performer intake would be perfect for the 352.

Good luck......M

Be sure to think which headers you'll run.  Harder to find pass car/CJ exhaust port headers than it is to find D2 headers for a truck.  FPA makes either though, but not cheap and needs the frame notched to fit in a 2WD on the pass side.

For a small inch FE in a truck I'd likely go C8AE-H or D2TE-AA, and spend a little on bowl porting and a good valve job.

Thank you all for the input.
Marx I'm going to use scat 6.49 rods.
