hey guys,
About 11 years ago I bought a 69 Cougar S code 390 car. It was a car that was all in pieces. Engine was out, partially built. Short block was done---well assembled. Oil pan was on. I got the heads for it, which I think had a valve job. It's been a decade since I've looked at them. But, I don't remember getting an intake manifold with the car. Since the engine was partially built, I was thinking to put it together. I guess I am anxious to do something engine related. But, I might assemble this. Looking at Blair's 396 engine in the dyno section, kinda inspired me to put this engine together. The kid did have a roller cam set-up, but he decided to keep it when he sold me the car. What would be different from Blair's engine is I may not use a Performer RPM intake. Not sure if the height difference would cause a problem. I'd probably go with the re-pro 428CJ exhaust manifolds. Also, I might go with a flat cam. So, my question is which intake would have come on a 69 Cougar S-code 390? and....with my other posting, this is on my mind-----is it known if this stock intake has decent balancing between the ports?
thanks,
Mark

Cast iron, 4V intake manifold. Not as much airflow as the CJ intake, but has good street manners. Not on par with the aluminum PI, or the RPM for horsepower. A used PI intake would work well, and have the correct height for the carburetor and air cleaner to clear the hood. Joe-JDC

The original stock intake for a '69 Cougar ( also '69 Mustang, Torino & Cyclone ) 390 4V would be a C9ZE-B casting. I have pictures below. Externally it looks almost exactly like a C4SE-A, but internally the runners are smaller to match the C8AE-H heads. It tends to be a little rare due to being used only one model year. It also wasn't used in the full size cars. Jay didn't test this for his book, I think the conclusion was performance would probably be close to the "T" Pickup truck cast iron intake which looks similar and also has the smaller runner passages.
