What are you gonna put in that one, Dean?  That straight axle ought to give you plenty of room...

plan A is to put the the pond block motor and c4 trans that I was going to put in my drag car into the 56 instead. however that means another season on the 289 in the drag car without a refresh. by nearest count it has about 600 passes on it now.....

plan B is to put the pond motor in the drag car and refresh the small block and put it into the 56, however I do hope to have the 56 on the track yet this season and that probably would not happen in this scenario...
what is your vote? LOL

I just can't let this go... The 56 gasser has to have a 500 horse Y block!

I didn't think there was such a thing as a 500 horse Y block  ;D

The gasser needs a CAMMER!

I beg to differ!   I just stood by a dyno and saw a 352 CI Y-Block make 500, 502, 504 HP on 3 consecutive runs with 10.1:1 compression.  Helped change 3 sets of heads, 3 intakes, 7 spacers, etc.(Yes, one set was mine, and my intake that made the 500+)  It was a great day, and I will shut up about the rest.  I don't want to steal anyone's thunder.  Joe-JDC.

I have had a lot of fun with y-blocks in these cars, however ,since I already have a FE nearly completed, I will use it in this one.

I think Ted Eatons' Y-block at Engine Masters made 500 HP also.  I can't resist poking fun at the Y-block crowd, since I have a couple of good friends who run them.  And one of them likes to give me a hard time about FEs...

Kinda figured that! ;)  It was RB's heads and intake that made 504 HP, and I am sure he will fill you in on pertinent details. LOL  It was a great day on the dyno, and I sure enjoyed it.  I was so tired at the end of the day that I was numb for the 3 hour drive back home.  The engine actually made more points and would have scored better than the EMC entry.  Joe-JDC.

Joe is being modest..  He ported those heads, the 4th set he has ever done ... along with the dual plane intake, and kicked all the other heads' asses that were tested that day. I am sure glad he likes Fords.

Streetable cam, solid lifter, dual plane intake, pump gas,750 vac secondary carb. peak hp@6500 rpm

Hp/ cu in would = a 610 hp 427

Sorry to sidetrack from the 56 gasser discussion but Y Block guys don't get that many opportunities to brag

Make that the 4th set of Y-block heads, I ported hundreds of others over the years.  Joe-JDC.

Very cool car, It's nice to see a 56 ford gasser. I picked up a straight axle to do that to my 56 club sedan a few years ago, but I changed my mind and I'm going to lower it instead.

though not close to race-ready yet, I took the car to BIR for their final race day of the season, mainly to get a road test of the work done so far. I regarded every system on the car to be suspect since I had only moved the car under its own power a few hundred feet previously. Ambient temp that morning was 40* and was informed by tech that they would only be running 1/8 mile and not until track temp was up to  minimum safety level. that was ok by me, after passing tech, I proceeded to drive around the pits and return road  for the next 30-40 minutes. most systems checked ok, carbs were a little fat but that was fine for today, I purposely set the throttle so it would only open about 2/3 of the way. finally got to make a pass about 1pm.
Traction was non-existant in 1st and 2nd, (i had not done any work on the rear other than set pinion angle and clamp the springs on the 9" that came with the car). coasted thru traps at 70 mph, the steering seemed to be ok but would take some getting used too. the guy at the time slip shack said I had left a fair amount of dirt and debris at the starting line! that was understandable considering the car had been sitting in the desert for years. After blowing air into the frame rails and taking with some other drivers in the pits, I went for a second pass, in the right lane this time where traction seemed a little better.
Up in smoke again off the line, short shifted to 2nd and Bang! car wanted to make a right turn, stopped and check for and leakage, none, so idled off to the trailer. day was finished with a broken left axel. Overall I considered a succesful day, look forward to next year!!

Looks like a stock axle?  28 or 31 spline?

the axles were 28 spline with "MW" stamped on the flange. the history on them is unknown as they came with car but there is evidence that the car was racer before the gasser conversion was started.
the cam in the background was from a previous episode.....

A M-W would indicate a Mark Williams axle, yet it doesn't look like one of their more modern 'unbreakable' axles. I'd venture it's an old M-W axle (like in very old!) that's not nearly as strong, 28 or 31 spline notwithstanding, as their newer stuff.

With Test-n-Tune only 1 month away I am beginning the upgrade of the differential to handle 21st century FE power level.
housing is back after reinforcement and straightening, pumpkin, axles and ladder bars ready to go in.
now if only the snow makes a rapid exit !

after getting educated on gear ratio as applied to steering gears and 660 holly tuning and decent weather, I was able to get to the track for a test and tune. track was not good.

7.38 @97mph still a long way to go

What are you shooting for, ET wise?
Title: Re: New Project

Hi Jay,
in the nostalgia classes my car looks to be in B/gas, that is a 10.50 index in the 1/4 mile. I need to run close to that to be competitive, not sure what that converts to in the 1/8 mile.

Post by: jayb on June 17, 2013, 02:00:34 PM
Dean, 7 flat in the eighth mile is about a 10.90 in the quarter, so you will need to run in the sixes in the eighth to get close to the ET you need...

This is a really cool project, Dean.  I love the old school look and the FE fits that perfect. '56s are the most beautiful car produced in the '50s, IMO. My Dad used to have a glass-top.

It sounds like you may be right on target, ET wise, once you get the tuning good and a good track. How did your traction issues fare with the new set-up? Are you limited on what type of tire you can use? I would guess traction is always an issue with gassers.

Hi Doug,
56 Fords are my favorite, I have had many and have 2 of them today.
Traction out of the hole was fair to poor but the worst was at the 1-2 shift were the tires would brake loose again! later in the day a 33 ford 3 window coupe broke loose on the upshift and bounced off the retaining wall with major damage.
I plan on trying again at BIR on Wednesday nite street legal drags if they will let me run it, its pretty loud, even with the header mufflers I have on it now. I am a veteran there with my 66 Fairlane and they know me so they just might let me run it.

This is a great thread.  I've been following along and enjoying every bit of it, including the Y block comments.  I guess if you stack your intake ports it may be nearly as unique as bolting your valve covers to your intake manifold.  Dean, awesome '56, it caused me to dig back into my garage until I touched a fin.  The neat thing about '57's is that FE's just fall into place.....

got some 10.5 x 30 tall tires and that improved my traction considerably, however I then developed a bad bog from the dual 660's. after trying everything I ditched the 660,s for my old BU/BT vacuum carbs. I attribute the relatively low convertor stall (3500) to my problems with the 660's. just not enough rpm to take all 8 barrels at once.
this weekends time slips attached: temp was 92 and humid with a 15 mph headwind

While it has been a bad week for chevrolet; (sink holes, pace car fire, recall announcements), its been good for me, I got my approval and registration for the gasser to run in the melt down drags at Byron Ill. this July. I tried to get there with it last summer but it did not happen, probably for the best as I did not get most of the bugs out of the car until last fall. Also, as Jay mentioned in the bronco post, the car got a little ink the April edition of Hot Rod magazine scene by readers section. I don't know that happened. Anyway, hope to see some forum members the summer at the meltdown event or at any of the local tracks in MN/Wi. I have a bad case of the spring fever!!
