Title: Cam opinions wanted
Post by: c9zx on March 01, 2012, 03:26:07 PM
4.25 bore 3.98 stroke Barry's stageX Eds with 10.0:1 SCR 91 octane pump gas in a street car (Cobra, 2500lbs). I like your opinions on a solid flat tappet. Would like to see peak power 5700-6000, So far my thoughts are 248/254@ .050, 110 LSA, .620/.635. All input is very welcomed. Thanks, Chuck

The 390 stroker dyno mule I tested in my book (445") peaked at 5600 - 5900 with most of the performance manifolds, and it used a Comp 306S solid cam.  The cam was 260@.050, and .640 lift if I recall correctly.  Your engine has more cubes than my 390 stroker, which will tend to drive the peak RPM down just a little.  I'd say you should be looking at around 260 @ .050" to hit the peak power RPM that you are looking for.

Also in that light of a car more cam is not a bad thing, first gear is going to spin tire no matter what cam you run. Not like you would over cam to the point first gear would be a dog is my point in a light weight car like that.

I think you're pretty close to where you want to be.  My 432 inch FE peaked at 6200 rpm with a 240/246 @ 0.050" cam.   There's more to it than just cubic inches and cam duration.  Nonetheless, I think you're close.

Ditto on the "more cam is not a bad thing" for a light car.

Thanks for the replies. Does anyone have experience with Oregon Cams? If, so good or bad? Thanks, Chuck

Ive used them before and will continue to use them. Great customer service and quality. I would call them and ask to talk to Ken. Be prepared to have all of the details for your ride, tranny, rear gears, etc. He knows FE's well.

I`ve been running Oregon Cams in my Fairmonts 428s for many years, very happy with them. I have also used their FE rocker shaft support kits, and have had used FE solid lifters re-surfaced by them. Plus Ken & Jason are longtime Ford racers too. I also buy my Brad Penn oil from Ken as well.
