Title: Initial carb set up - QFT SS 830 on a 445 at 3,200 feet.
Post by: Yellow Truck on November 11, 2015, 10:55:39 AM
I asked this earlier along with a question about initial timing. I just got the last of my parts to start the build (too late to drive it this year, but at least I can get the engine back in the truck) - so time to get to work.

I've never done this before, and I will be setting it up on a chassis dyno, but for the initial set up before we start it I'd like to be fairly close. The engine is a 445 with BBM heads and a Street Dominator intake, stock distributor, roller rockers from TD, hydraulic roller lifters, a roller cam (280/266 average duration - 230/236 duration @ .050), and a QFT SS 830 carb. The engine is going into a 69 F100 4WD.

Brent was kind enough to answer my questions about timing and pushrod length, but I'd like some guidance on the carb. My understanding is I probably have to pull it back a bit for this build, and we are at 3,200 feet.

Personally, I think that however they deliver will be as close as you get.  You can lean left or right a bit, but the engine has a vote too, not just air density.

I say bolt it on as-is and let the dyno get you close, and the street get you closer as you learn how the engine behaves.

I'd agree that the as-delivered calibration should be very close.  I travel to race from 1719' MSL where the DA runs 3000~4500 down to MSL 900' with no jetting changes to the car.  It's have to be seriously good weather at the lower altitude to warrant a jet change.

Well then, I'll bolt it down and try it. Thanks.
