I'd suspect the daily high/low to be 18/13c or so.

Extreme high/low more like 26/4c.  If you visit Georgia where I'm at it's more like 36c for a high :P  But the good news is it's a wet heat.  Chicago will be a lil cooler than New Jersey.
If you see this boat Coastal NJ or off New york City, wave at me.

Is there something interesting to see on that route?

Yeah, the skeletal remains of industry, crushing depression, and the decline of a middle class.  Ever seen someone smoke crack?  That could be fun.... for a one time donation of $20, you have a highly entertaining tour guide.

I think Drew got up on the wrong side of the bed this morning.  Heo, if you happen to go by Dayton Ohio, the US Air Force museum there is a great stop.  Also, on Friday September 18 (late afternoon and evening, I think), and during the day on Saturday September 19, Drag Week racing will be going on at the Gateway race track in Collinsville, IL, which is about 90 minutes south of New Berlin.  With luck I will have made it that far and be there racing...
Title: Re: Going to USA
Post by: Drew Pojedinec on August 31, 2015, 08:30:29 AM
I shoulda added a smiley face  :-)  (Tho I wasn't joking about crackheads as tour guides, that is actually a pretty decent practice)
I think catching a tidbit of drag week would be awesome.

New York City and Chicago are both really nice cities.  Chicago is very organized and fun to hang out in, (especially since I like Polish food).  New York City is easily the greatest city on the planet.  It's a worthy trip all on its own.  Subways are decently cheap, and you can walk most of the island with ease.  Next time I head up there I need to go hit Ellis Island.  Previously it was rough, but the last few times I've sailed past it, it looks well restored and it'd be neat to see where my grandparents staggered into the country.  People like to forget that this country is for the most part, 100% immigrants.

If you're going to be in Indy you should stop at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum.  It's located at 16th and Georgetown on the west side of town.  It's one of my personal favorites!

https://www.indianapolismotorspeedway.com/at-the-track/museum

In addition to about 75 vehicles that are displayed, there's a special exhibit that runs until November 30th; Dan Gurney Race Cars: An All American Exhibition.  It showcases a number of the significant Eagle race cars that won at both Indy and in F1.

Enjoy your trip to the USA,
Bruce

Hehe, oh come on!  the Bronx isn't that bad, it does help to speak some Spanish tho.  Clearly you rode the D or 4 train WAY too far.  Needed to get off at Herald Square and walk to PennStation to catch a rail to Jersey.  Chicago's rails are much more logical....
I think NYC used to have a dozen private rails that all got bought out by the city and so it doesn't always fall in a logical form because it wasn't ever designed as a cohesive system.

Last time I went to NYC, we crashed in the Bronx on someones couch and strolled through the city.  Was good fun.  We went there because my 11 year old son demanded to see Bob Dylan in concert before he quits touring.  I felt if I only had one place to see him, it'd be at the Beacon theater.

Don't forget to visit Cleveland as well!!!

Detroit^
hehehe, I LOVE that tourism video for Cleveland.  When they elect me as lifetime Tourism Czar of the Americas, I will probably put that on TV as a commercial, 6 times daily.

I will also change the state motto of Missouri to "Missouri Loves Company."
I think it's got a nice ring to it.  Florida's new motto will be "The further north ya go, the further south you get."

Can i buy ammo in the states im passing through? Illinois-Iowa-Indiana-
Michigan-Ohio-Pennsylvania-New Jersey.
I need some 22WRF for my Whinchester 1890 and i cant find them in
Sweden
Title: Re: Going to USA
Post by: jayb on September 05, 2015, 06:23:58 PM
You should be able to buy ammo anywhere along the way.  Getting it back to Sweden may be an issue, I don't know...
Title: Re: Going to USA
Post by: Joe-JDC on September 05, 2015, 09:03:13 PM
Not to disagree, but some states require their state's drivers license now to purchase any ammunition.  My son is a long distance trucker, and he has encountered this in several places.  Joe-JDC

Yeah, getting ammo back to Sweden would be a REAL problem! I don't think you'll want to get a first hand tour of the inside of a jail cell :o

Since you'll be near my area in NW Ohio, if you get near Lima, Ohio, on I75 that's only 14 miles from me. IF you're in that area, I'd be happy to have you stop by and give you a ride or just chat about FEs. Sounds like you'll have a pretty busy schedule though.
Title: Re: Going to USA
Post by: Heo on September 06, 2015, 02:59:35 AM
Thanks for the offer Dough we are passing through
Lima as i understand it and if we dont have to busy
scedule or its in the midle of the night we be glad
to drop by :)

SAS allow 2 kg ammo in original boxes in your
luggage. But you have to declare it when you check
in your luggage
But i dont know what the Police and Customs in
Sweden says about it. As i understands the law
when i read it. Its no problem if you are on a hunting
trip and have permit for the gun an ammo.
Im not on a hunting trip though and I  dont bring the
gun
I have to call them monday

Legalities aside, I think availability will be a big issue. Up here in the Dakotas, we have the hoarders buying every .22 shell they can find then reselling them at triple the price.  Other calibers are not a problem though.

Wow, that's interesting.  In Minnesota we can just walk in to Wal-mart or Cabella's and buy whatever you need.  And Minnesota is a fairly liberal state.  They don't make you show ID in Texas, do they Joe?
Title: Re: Going to USA

Heo can you not order online in Sweden?
That way you don't have to deal with boundaries and different laws.
I've got quite a bit of WRF22.
Bought most online even in the police state of California.
Here's one outlet but there are plenty more.
http://www.cabelas.com/product/CCI-Bulk-WRF-Ammo-with-Dry-Storage-Box/740952.uts
Title: Re: Going to USA
Post by: Heo on September 06, 2015, 02:28:59 PM
I tried to buy online from USA but they can not
ship outside the USA.
And no gundealer in Sweden import 22 WRF.
most have never heard of it. Some tell me there
is no such cal.and try to sell me 22 win.magnu
My 1890 was imported by a swede that moved
back to Sweden in 1907.  He bought the gun
and 2 boxes of ammo and found out he couldnt
by ammo in sweden so he only fired 4 shots
and i fired the 5th after i bought it from a museum.
Thats all it have been fired during its life
So i have one unopened box and one box missig 5
rounds of blackpowder 22 WRF 8)
So its a gun im not going to use much but a couple
of boxes would be nice to have

No, it won't. Things are pretty strict when it comes to shipping ammo across boundaries. They will be bound by federal law the same as everyone else.

Heo, the only thing I can say is I will look for some. It's not a real common ammo being different from Shorts, Longs and Mags. There are a couple places around my area that MAY have a short supply. Since you'll be in the area, if I can find some, I'll get it to you. I'll look and get back to you.
Title: Re: Going to USA
Post by: Heo on September 06, 2015, 03:45:51 PM
No you have to be certified by the goverment to import
ammo for comercial bla. bla.
I shall contact the police and customs first thing monday morning
about what it take to bring a few boxes home from a trip

Thanks Dough that would be nice so we dont have to run around
the countryside looking for gunshops with WRF
Yes they are not a common cal.I Saw CCI makes them in batches
now and then

Of the states mentioned, if you haven't made your purchase before you get to NJ you may as well give up.  Cabelas is likely not the best/cheapest place to buy ammo but are usually pretty amazing places with a special section for rare/used guns for sale so you need to map out the Cabelas stores along your route.  I know the one South of Detroit has a very good used gun area.
Title: Re: Going to USA
Post by: Heo on September 07, 2015, 03:07:25 AM
I have talked with the Police and Customs.
the Police had no clue and told me some
fantasies to cover up there incompetens
The customs told me it was ok as long
as i had gunpermit for the caliber just
inform the customs when i come to Sweden
fill in a form and pay a fee
But with the airline fee and custom fee
its to expensive
So Dough you dont have to sears for ammo
but thanks anyway

That's a bummer, Heo. Things get really funky when you start crossing borders and you CERTAINLY don't want to make a mistake. Good luck with your search in Sweden.

In some stores they will ask for ID, and only allow you to buy one box of anything.  Cabella's has limits here on some ammo, and none available in others.  For the longest time we could not get anything in 22 caliber, but slowly it is available in one box(50 rounds)--no bricks.  I went for months looking for .22MHP.  I have an advantage, though, Jay.  My white hair and 'stash usually gets me by without showing proof of age or residence.  LOL

Yes, I got the PM. Glad things worked out. I just took the Mach for a drive tonight to see a friends new '29 Model A tonight. About the most rust free original I've ever seen.

I don't know of anyplace that sells racks anymore. They used to be common, but now it almost guarantees you to get pulled over and harassed by law enforcement. It also used to be common to see someone sitting along the road waiting to shoot a groundhog, but even that invites problems these days. Needless to say, they don't last long around my place ;)

Had a great time seeing you and your buddy today, Heo (which, by the way, is just an alias to throw off border patrols ;)). Just as I was finishing up the exhaust on the truck, so good timing. Seeing that incredibly solid center door '19 Model T was a rare chance. I don't believe I've ever seen a T with such good ORIGINAL wood! What a beauty. My 81 year old Dad got a real kick out of seeing it.

I wasn't sure how long you had to stay, and I had another 1/4 tank left in the Mustang so we could have kept driving for another......10 miles (at that pace ;D)

I looked forward all weekend to meeting you. Thanks for stopping by, and I hope you enjoy the rest of your journey.

Very cool to meet you guys.
We had multiple folks drop in all at the same time - so things got pretty hectic.
I hope you saw enough to make it worth the visit.

Doug's Mach has a pretty nasty sounding motor in there....I envy the chance for the ride.

That Model T body was really, really nice - nicer than many cars I have seen from the 70s - you scored big!
Enjoy the rest of your journey - - seems like a great time!

been a real adventure .I made a lot of new friends

ful country with a lot of nice people  (wish i could hang
my flag with pride to)
Thanks Dough and Barry for the nice time i spent with
you
Its sad to leave all the fun and nice wheather.
But its nice to be at home, sleap in my own bed,
home cooked food,Although the winter have started
here with ice starting on the lakes,Now i can start
a fire in my mancave. And start building my 447
since i got the parts from Barry with me
Now back to sleep for another 12-14 hours

Lars, glad to hear you and your friends had a good time on your adventure in this great country of ours.  I guess your plans had to change a little because of the weather but still lots of fun to be had.  Looking forward to hearing about more progress on that 447 for the Galaxie!
