Title: 1967 Fairlane XL Weight
Post by: ScotiaFE on July 09, 2015, 08:32:59 PM
I finally got the Fairlane on a scale.
A portly 3682 lbs. in full street trim with 1/2 a tank.
Plus my 14.5 stones, so not a light weight by any means.
Took it into Dartmouth cruise night for a test run. Pretty good turn out.
Couple of 100 cars for sure. Car's working good. Does not really like slow speed stuff though. ::)

We will be going to the Atlantic Nationals this weekend in Moncton N.B..
April Wine is playing the stage. Kool old band from my youth.
Driving the car. No trailer. 3 hour highway run.
This years prize is a 32 Highboy. Nice looking car from the pic.

That's not that heavy, Howie, my Mach 1 is close to that weight...

In race trim I probably get it down to 3500ish
with the light weight wheels and sans front sway bar and a couple other things I remove
for track time.
I want that Highboy!
Got's me a good 390/TL to slip right in there. ;)

With a plan like that I think the Highboy needs you more than you need it!

Howie, was that 3682 with you in it? Back in 1977, I raced a 66 Fairlane GTA 2 door HT. It was a PS, PB (drum)car, and stock and complete, it weighed 3560 lbs, without me in it. Since I normally towed it to the track with a tow bar, I partially gutted it, no exhaust, converted to manual steering and brakes, removed the heater box, console and back seat, and carpet, and lightened it with an aluminum intake (newly released Edelbrock Streetmaster), Cyclone headers, and a set of US Indy 15x4" aluminum slot front wheels. That got it down to 3280 lbs, without driver.

Rory, I'm pretty sure Howie meant without his 203lbs. Did you have frame connectors and a full roll bar in your car then? That could account for some of the weight. I've been comparing weights alot lately. My Mustang is 3460 without me and I always figured it was heavy.

That '32 is really cool, but I'd have to stick one of my flatheads in there :)
And April Wine was one of my favorite bands from back in the day. I still listen to them on a regular basis. Great band!

Doug, no roll bar or subframe connectors. Car only ran mid 12s, so didn`t need a roll bar, and at that tme I had never heard of subframe connectors.
By the way, 3460 lbs for a FE 69 mustang ain`t bad at all. My 70 Mustang fastback non Mach 1) with a 351C 4V and FMX weighed 3460, my 69 R code auto 69 Mach 1 was 3560 lbs (aluminum intake and headers), and my 70 R code 4 speed 70 Mach 1 weighed 3650lbs, also with alum. intake, headers, as well as a Lakewood scattershield. I also had a couple of 69 R code Fairlane Cobra fastbacks, the fairly loaded  automatic car weighed 3850 , all these weights were without driver.

I was not in the car.
It is fitted with a 6 point roll bar and all the other weight adding equipment.
Full exhaust and some old steel Mag 500's and BFG hockey pucks.
It does have a glass front bumper. :D

I misread your original post, Howie, and thought that the weight was with you in the car.  My 69 Mach 1 currently weighs a little over 3600 with me in it, making it about 3400 without driver.  Adding to the weight is a full cage (~110 pounds), subframe connectors, and the Gear Vendors overdrive (about 50 pounds).  Making it lighter than stock is the aluminum block, aluminum heads, sheet metal intake, headers, and the aluminum 9" case.

I sometimes have a hard time understanding the variances of weights between cars. My Mach is all steel with an all iron engine (except for the aluminum intake, but it's dual carbs), has a factory oil cooler, which should be an easy 15-20lbs, has a full fold down rear seat, a factory big in/out toploader, an AC dash and heater box, although no AC components, and Dynamat insulation laid all over the floorboards, inside the doors and under the front fenders (stops stones from denting the fenders), which would easily be another 40lbs. The only lighter than stock components are the headers and Lakewood and no front sway bar. Yet it still seems lighter than most all FE Mustangs I've seen. And it was weighed on scales at the local grain elevator, but they HAVE to be state certified by law.

If I had wanted to, I'm pretty sure I could have lost 200lbs easily in the car.

Cyclone is 3460 lb (weighed on certified scale) less my carcass but with 20 gal gas tank pressed full, complete stock interior (incl power windows), fiberglass hood, alum intake, headers + about 100 lbs (est) of Dynamat.

The 1967 Comet fact sheet quotes the base Cyclone 2-door hardtop at 3228 lb curb weight (all liquids plus full tank of gas) + 266 lbs for the FE engine, 59 lb for the C6, 31 lbs for dual exhaust and 21 lbs for power windows (all weights additional over the base 289 model) = 3605 lb.

If all this can be believed, the net weight saving yielded by a Crites hood, PI intake and headers, and assuming the additional Dynamat weight is probably offset by the amount of factory sound deadener/insulation/undercoat pulled out/scraped off, is in the vicinity of 150 lbs.

A Cyclone GT with 4-speed, manual steering and brakes and no additional options was 3534 lb back in the day.

Admittedly a WAG, but suspect the Comets might have been a tad heavier than similarly equipped Fairlanes of the same model year.

Howie - for track outings you might replace those two La-Z-Boy recliner front seats with something more appropriate, probably pick up a few 10ths right there  ;D

Have a safe road trip.

Can't wait to weigh mine.
I got my hopes up today when I lifted the front end to roll the tranny out from underneath. 8)
