Marc, you said you used the Moser bearings, did you use the 9508M or 9508B?
The difference is the M does not have an outer o-ring and says it requires the factory axle seal, the B has an outer o-ring and looks as if it doesn't need the axle seal
I am thinking of going with the B and leaving the seals in there, but wondering what you did
Thanks!

I have run 2 big bearing after market housings and tired both types of bearings.
The best I've seen in my experience is the sealed bearing with the inner seal
and a smear of goo on the outer metal case of the seal and tap it in.
The o ring type bearing will leak without a inner seal. BTDT

Hmm
Wasn't me Ross.
May have been Doug (cjshaker).
I let Currie build it and checking my paperwork there is no bearing brand mentioned.

Howie, I've run bearings I got from Mark Williams with the O-ring around the bearing OD for years in my Mach 1, and never had a leak. No inner seal, and no goo. Pretty sure I've got the same setup in my Galaxie, and it doesn't leak either. Maybe there's an issue with your axle housing ID?

Possibly a sharp edge that the o ring catches on sliding in and/or grooves worn into the axle tube where the bearing sits. Mine has a couple small grooves around the bearing. I just attribute that to being the original housing and having 28 spline axles changed regularly in old racing days. I wouldn't try the o ring bearings on mine unless I switch to a new housing. I contemplated using the o rings when I rebuilt the rear after it grenaded, but after seeing the grooves, I opted to stick with the traditional seals. Never had a problem with those.

Speaking of sharp edges.
When I re did my truck bearings there was a (relatively) huge groove/ridge cast into the end under the bearing which had over the years formed itself to it and of course leaked.
It didn't look like a bearing install screw up, it actually looked like it was part of the casting.
I'd have to say it leaked darn near from new.
After a little carefull grinding it doesn't leak a bit now.
Guess the moral is to check the housing carefully before proceeding.

My Mosers don't leak on the Mustang either, been in and out of the car with the same o-rings since 1998
I'll likely leave the seals in there, they aren't hurting anything, but hoping things seal up better
BTW, I found a plugged vent, likely the issue all along, but I still plan to put the nice bearings in it

To be honest I don't know why it leaked.
And I have not even looked at the thing in (and I hate to say this) YEARS.
It's been on the back burner for far to long. ::)
