Title: MSD Gear Change
Post by: ScotiaFE on May 23, 2015, 10:52:34 PM
So we have to change the gear to a steel gear.
First I have to fix my Dizzy. The pickup failed!

An open pickup.

What a good pickup should read.

The cast gear.

It pops right off with my cheapo 3 arm yanker.
(http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q128/ScotiaFE/MSD/DSCN1202_zpsh5hbsk4m.jpg) (http://s135.photobucket.com/user/ScotiaFE/media/MSD/DSCN1202_zpsh5hbsk4m.jpg.html)

The new steel gear. It has a pretty good burr in it that must be removed, BUT you do not want
to stick a file in there. The hole is the same size as the shaft so there is very little press.
(http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q128/ScotiaFE/MSD/DSCN1203_zpssv0vhqpx.jpg) (http://s135.photobucket.com/user/ScotiaFE/media/MSD/DSCN1203_zpssv0vhqpx.jpg.html)

I used a small burr on the die grinder and removed the offending burr.
(http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q128/ScotiaFE/MSD/DSCN1204_zpsqi8dtdiy.jpg) (http://s135.photobucket.com/user/ScotiaFE/media/MSD/DSCN1204_zpsqi8dtdiy.jpg.html)

So this picture shows the gear at the proper 3.045" which is the distance the work sheet calls for
in the kit you get when you order the gear. The hole is only drilled on one side and it does not
line up with the hole drilled in the shaft. hmmm...
(http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q128/ScotiaFE/MSD/DSCN1205_zpsowqtot79.jpg) (http://s135.photobucket.com/user/ScotiaFE/media/MSD/DSCN1205_zpsowqtot79.jpg.html)

So I did some figgering and drilled a new hole in the gear to match the cast gear I took off.
The gears are the same size so it should line right up. It should. lol

Hey look at that it lined right up.
The gear is exactly at the required 3.045" called for and I did not have to drill another hole in the shaft.
Which I did not want to do.

Ready to go in the Fairlane.
I'm getting real close to lighting the fire. ::)

I don't think I've ever seen one of those magnetic pickups fail; that is very unusual...

i have seen that gear change on power nation on spike t.v.  for what its worth they said (in the directions)  that the gear should be turned 90 degrees and the shaft of distributor re drilled.  but they were going from steel to bronze gear,  and that was on an msd distributor.

We'll give it a spin today. No GoPro, just an old Nikon.

I just had to replace the one on my MSD. Not a common thing, but it happens. When I ordered a new one from Summit, they sent me two by mistake, yet only billed me for one. I guess I should send the other one back.....one of these days....when I get around to it....maybe. :)
