I have seen FE weights numerous times on the net but it seem like half those were guesses.
Out of curiosity I decided to weigh a bunch of FE parts on a newly calibrated scale.
Often one asks how much they will save using aluminum heads, intake etc
I know others have most likely done this but its hard to find info online.
1st up was the total weight of the 1966 352 I had just removed from my F100
1966 352
708 lbs Complete carb to pan including flywheel, clutch, bellhousing, water pump, fuel pump, distributor, balancer
Pretty much as pulled out of truck.

Also curious what a typical FE would be with added aluminum heads and intake.
I built a engine cradle to make weighing much easier and also for storing engine's as needed.
I have a large furniture style dolly to move it around on.
Of course zero out the scale first with the cradle

As pictured of a 418 complete pan to carb, distributor, water pump, fuel pump, oil and filter, cj valve covers, balancer
468 lbs

475 lbs same as above but adding a Automatic flex plate
497 lbs same but with Standard counter weighted Flywheel
553 lbs same but adding the bellhousing and clutch/pressure plate & mounting hardware

I will be adding a bunch more soon

Here's one. You can't read the scales really easily, but the say 263 and 277 pounds, for a total of 540 pounds. No flywheel, no starter, no headers. This is an all aluminum motor.

I want my garage to have all ^^^^that^^^^ weight in it one day. ;D

I am surprised how close in weight that is to mine . .

Here's another one. This is the low buck 390 build I did for Car Craft several years ago. Aluminum heads and intake, and everything else factory (including the water pump). This engine also has headers attached, and a flexplate, although you can't see it in the photo. 509 pounds complete:

Very interesting thread! 155 pounds is a lot of weight to shed, although the iron manifolds on the 352 would add about 20 pounds over the manifold-less 418, approximately. I'd assume the crank should be lighter in the 352 with a shorter stroke, but maybe equaling out with better/heavier rods in the 418. A steel bellhousing would certainly be much lighter than the iron unit also.
Nice to see that aluminum heads would pretty much counter the extra 50 pounds in my Sideoiler Garage block over a factory iron 427.
Good stuff. Thanks for the post.

22 lbs diaphragm style clutch setup
23 lbs Long Style

64 lbs 352 std std crank
65 lbs 390 .020 .020 crank
I was surprised at this one as always had 70lbs in mind on the cranks . .

19 lbs on the truck headers
20 lbs on the stock 352 truck manifolds

Now you need to weigh the cast shortie manifolds and a set of long cast headers, can you post a list of parts weights when your done?
-
Thanks for posting Jay,
Looks like I'll save around 155lbs off my original stock set up by using ally heads intake and headers. I was wondering about that. It might help make up for the too short front springs, lol.
PS these FEs are relatively light for the HP output, I spent a few years playing with Studebaker 289s @ 650ish lbs with no ally parts available.
Phil.

What kind of hp/tq did that one make?
That was right about 500 HP and 500 lb-ft of torque. Details are in the article:

One must subtract 20 lbs for the exhaust manifolds and another 19 for the engine cradle on the 352. Checking back the scale was not zero'd for the 352 cradle.

I will post up what ever I have around to weigh. A month ago I had quite the collection of FE parts but have sold a lot. Getting old and slowing down
Would have never used the stuff. Things just too cramped after letting my large storage go.
Still a bunch more stuff that needs to go.
Maybe if FElon-ee is watching like I know he is hint hint he could drop by with a few pieces of his many in collection so we can get some more weights.
I actually think one of his alter ego's is already posting . . LOL!
