Title: Identify this timing cover?
Post by: Jackal on March 26, 2015, 10:56:06 AM: Supposedly on a 428CJ from '67. Supposedly also a factory race engine. Just curious, apparently no one seems to have an answer for that strange "hump" in it, or what may lie behind. I'm told that the casting number behind the generator shows that it is a 406/428, and that the trans had to be dropped to check for the presence of an "A" on the back of the block indicating that it is the 428. There may or may not be some other special markings stamped down near or under the oil pan. ;) Thanks!

Post by: jayb on March 26, 2015, 11:24:25 AM: That is an early stamped steel timing cover, 1958 through 1961 FE I believe. I'm not sure why the hump is there, but I would guess that the early fuel pumps required it. Here's a cleaned up one on ebay:

Also, no such thing as a 67 428CJ; those engines started midway through the 1968 model year.

Post by: Qikbbstang on March 27, 2015, 07:54:12 PM: I have one, they're definitely cool with plenty of complex features that had to be complex/costly for FoMoCo to manufacture. Never scale'd one up against a cast alum one but they are not heavy.

Post by: Rory428 on April 02, 2015, 01:14:58 AM: Yes it is an early stamped steel timing cover, looks just like the one on my origional 1959 332 FE. As mentioned, the bulge is for the mechanical fuel pump. These were used with the early style flanged camshaft with the spring and button that rode against the inside of the cover.

Post by: gdaddy01 on April 12, 2015, 11:04:24 AM: make sure to use the early gasket to seal it to the block , it will leak if you do not . I learned the hard way .
